Hi everyone, I just read a post that Lysol spray cans can't be taken on the plane any more. Is that only for carry on bags? What about checked bags. We find a small can good to travel with to blow through the Air Conditioning to try to sanitize it if we use the A/C.
How about the spray cans of sunscreen can we check those in our bags too?
I have seen the suggestion to make a trip to the local HiLo but am hoping we will be able to take these items in our checked bags.

I took a travel size of Lysol in July in my checked bags and didn't have a problem. We use tubes of sunscreen, packed in the bags as well.

We took Lysol, hair spray, and sunscreen spray in July in checked bags, no problem. Come to think of it, we had quite a lot of aerosol and never thought anything about it when we were packing.

According to the TSA list of prohibited item, aerosols are not permitted in carry-on or checked luggage "EXCEPT for personal care or toiletries in limited quantities." Emphasis added. Lysol is, in my mind, sort of falls into a gray area of personal care vs. a household cleaner so I would take the position at it sanitizes the room so it is for personal care. However, you will not be standing by the TSA inspector as your checked bag is inspected. Might think about putting such a note inside the sealed plastic bag you should be putting the can of Lysol into after taping the lid to the can. When TSA did inspections of checked luggage with the passenger standing right there, I saw TSA take out a can of Lysol from checked luggage saying that household items were not allowed. But that was in the early days of TSA when procedures and protocols were still being developed. I suggest you leave the Lysol with you maid before leaving (with a note). Chuck PS: besides spray the AC unit, we also spray both sides of all the pillows.

Thanks Chuck, very good suggestions. We take the little travel size Lysol and put it in our toiletry bag so maybe it will make it through.
P.S. We look forward to getting to HII in December and checking out the diving after 9 years of being away!

I was the one who posted about the spray cans. We flew out of Philly and after we got into our room at hedo and was unpacking we found a note saying they had removed the cans because they were banded from checked luggage. We never tried again. We use to bring both products and then pass them around to friends.

I do not take Lysol either, but the cans I took were the big ones but I stopped taking them when I saw a TSA inspector take one away from another passenger's checked bag. Never tried bug spray in my luggage.
Perhaps the much smaller spray can (only 1 oz) mentioned above will fly (pun intended) thru the TSA inspection as a personal item.

My spray cans were also the large ones since we pass them around. I dont miss taking them with us since it gives us an excuse to take a taxi into Negril.

Put some liquid Lysol all purpose cleaner in a small pump spray bottle in your checked bag. Just a suggestion.

We know a couple that brings multiple cans of bug bombs. As soon as they arrive, the get naked, set off a bug bomb and leave. When they get back to their room to get ready for dinner, anything that was "hidden" in the room is now dead.

But what about the poor room lizard! Parrot.
All in all, I'd rather be a hippy.

Per the TSA website, aerosols are prohibited in both carry-on and checked luggage "except for personal care or toiletries in limited quantities". What that means in simple english is that it's the discretion of the TSA screener whether your aerosol cans of anything will make it to your destination with you. Also, consider putting any containers of fluids inside of a leakproof container (like a couple of ziplock bags). Any air inside of the bottle with your fluids is going to expand as the aircraft climbs to altitude, even though it's pressurized, and may cause leakage into your baggage. It's a real bummer to arrive someplace and find your stuff soaked with something that leaked inside your luggage.

we have taken the travel size cans of Lysol in our carry-on and checked bags with no problems.
Maybe we've just gotten lucky.

Perhaps taping a note around the Lysol cans explaining that the owner of the bag is very allergic to molds and mildews and Lysol is used to kill these spores, making it a medical/personal care item.
