When I was at Hedo in November the computers in the room off the lobby did not require use of the password and the WiFi was wide open, as well. Have any recent visitors found that to be the case? If so, I'd bring my laptop down. If not, I'll buy time on the lobby computers. I will be going home this Sunday for a week. Thanks for any help!

WiFi needs to be freely available to everyone everywhere.
But pay no attention to my pronouncements...

WiFi worked great in my room in "H" block last October and this February. I did some streaming video for a person in our group that couldn't be there because of medical reasons. The charges at that time were $15 per day or $90 per week. I'll be bringing down my computer this trip and stream some video to my buddy to see all his friends on the beach (where the WiFi also woked well).

we were there the week of Nov. 8th and needed to buy time - the few times were were in the internet cafe it seemed everyone was logging on by the passcode they were given. Considering Jake is there now posting by way of wifi, that he paid for the week, I'd say your experience last November was a "glitch". Jake's a engineer type (ie: smart) so I'm sure he would have checked out free options before purchasing the time!

With the WiFi the desk gives you a username and password so that when you logon your computer will connect with the network MOST anywhere on the property. It's still any expensive proposition when you are charged $90 per week for access. Most quality hotels that I know of include WiFi as part of you charges as an UPGRADE to enhance the customers stay.

You do need to buy an account and log in, so there is no "free" WiFi available. However, if you are asking if it is "secure," I'd guess no.

And yes, I did walk around trying to find a free signal before buying time! I am a cheap bastard after all.......Jake

There is no reason more than one person couldn't share a WiFi connection - one person signs up and the rest just clone that MAC address (as long as only one machine is on at a time).

Or for a group, bring a base hub (log the hub into the WiFi) and anyone who wants can come by and plug in.

or...

I was there from from 11/15-11/23 last year. The lobby computers required no password (aka free)and i was told that the WiFi was leaking out to anyone...didn't have my laptop, so I can't swear to it.)

Only one lap top can be logged on at a time.
$90.00 a week seems a little steep but they do have to pay for the system.
No one says that you can not share an account with freinds as there is no time limit.
It did work from the rooms.

Here's another vote thinking WiFi should be complimentary. Once they set up the system there really no extra costs for them if people use it. Or am I wrong?

If you're going to be all-inclusive why charge for something that's free? Charge for use of the scuba boats or something, something that really does cost them when you use it.

Tourists are just a source of money, so I don't think you'll see free WiFi until there is more competition (hmmm, maybe a rogue station operated off of the blue taxi?).

Anyway Jamaica likely pays a premium for the data sent over to North America (I think there is only one undersea cable that has to go the long way around). These costs will be passed along.

Nothing is free, anywhere, including Wi-Fi. If you don't charge the people using it, that means everyone is paying for it through other prices on other items (such as their rooms). I don't have a problem paying for it, since I'm one of a minority who actually use or want it......Jake

Yeah, WiFi in places like Negril probably aren't going to be complimentary for a while....think about the behind the scenes cost

1. Equipment (which is probably paid for already)
2. Internet Connection to the resort (probably not cheap considering where it is, and have enough bandwidth to have a lot of people on it)
3. Someone either trained on how to operate/fix it, or a contractor to do the work (probably monthly service fee)
4. Repair/replacing of equipment (wi-fi access points don't last forever)

I'll probably paying the $90 to use it while we're there...but I'd rather pay the $90, as opposed to the resort's rates going up for everyone else...
