I have already booked (through Denny) my Hedo trip for New Year's Eve. Since I've booked it many months in advance, I'm hoping that we'll be beyond all of this by then. And yet ...

I heard they are continuing with the buffet, but having a staff member watch us for good food-taking habits...grin!

If anybody is using American Airlines to get to/from Jamaica, be aware that AA is cancelling all long haul flights as of midnight Monday 3/16.

Respect.

and I believe that all travelers to JA have a required 14-day quarantine starting March 16...but that article from the JA site now has an error 404 so I don't know if the is overloaded or they are changing the info...we'll be cancelling our April trip to Hedo shortly.

Can you please post a link to a page on the AA web site where you found that the Jamaica flights were affected. All I can find is http://news.aa.com/news/news-detail...COVID-19-031420-OPS-DIS-03/default.aspx. That page specifically says that Caribbean flights (among other short-haul flights) will continue - at least at the moment.

The page I saw was referring to Jamaican residents traveling back to JA. It wasn't 100% clear on that so I followed up with them. No reply as of yet, but perhaps that is why the page is down.

Here is what I found:
http://www.loopjamaica.com/content/coronavirus-govt-imposes-travel-restrictions-uk-jamaica

but like we all know, this is evolving minute by minute, so who knows what it will be tomorrow. Best plan is if you have travel plans ( we do) to keep an eye on the news.

Denny,

Use Google and search for American Airlines long haul flights.

I misspoke. They are cancelling 75% of their long haul flights.

But we're in Guatemala now, and we had our Thursday return flight to Miami cancelled. Luckily, we were able to get on the 2 PM flight to Miami on Monday. It turns out that that will be the last AA flight to Miami from Guatemala.

Respect.

We were hoping to get to Hedo in April, but we live in Singapore and have been on Jamaica's travel ban for a few months now.

I want to give a short idea on what we are dealing with here. Maybe give some insight as to the future there.

Singapore saw its first coronavirus the middle of January. Shortly after the first outbreak, flight restrictions began. Every time there was a new travel restriction, there was confusion about the restriction. In an area of the globe where passports, visas, residency and work permits, and connecting flights in any number of small countries, can factor into where you depart and arrive, specific travel restrictions have been a mess of confusion. Airline always struggle to adapt, but things are always confused for a few days following the restriction announcement.

Tourism in SEAsia has been decimated. Bali, Thailand, and the Philippines are being hit the hardest and they are the least capable countries to deal with such a hit. These countries are very much Jamaica-similar. Hong Kong and here in Singapore, things are not better from a tourism point, but both countries have other industries to fall back on.

We are being asked to work from home. Everyone. No face to face business meetings. If you have to go to the office, business are staggering working hours; some people come into the office in the morning, other in the afternoon. No public gatherings larger than 250 people. No religious ceremonies including weddings and funerals.

We have our temperature taken before entering any building, any office, any mall, any apartment building, and subway stations. When I go to my office I have my temperature taken 3 times. If you are found running a temperature, the authorities are called and you are dealt with accordingly. Maybe home quarantine, maybe hospital. But quarantine somehow for 14 days for sure.

Just last night we were notified that if we travel to any Asian country, European country, Middle Eastern country, or Australia, we need to quarantine when we arrive back in Singapore for 14 days, even if we have NO symptoms. The announcement came 12 hours before enforcement. If you break quarantine it is a minimum $20K fine and jail time. Yes, several people have been arrested for violating quarantine. And this new restriction is after 3 months of dealing with the virus already.

We had grocery store hoarding. Toilet paper and the lot. It will end in a week. Once the people who hoard have hoarded, things will get back to normal quick. It did here.

There is a time when every country begins testing people en masse, and the number of infected always spikes and causes panic. Did in China, did in South Korea, did here, will happen in the States. This to gets under control quick. Once a country knows the infected, they can isolate, and the numbers of infected drop quick following the spike.

We are not exactly a third world country here in Singapore. Quite the opposite. And Singapore is not exactly a hard country to shut down to contain a virus. You can ride your bike around the country...in a morning. It should not be hard to track a virus outbreak here. But it is.

When our Prime Minister announced the new travel/quarantine restrictions last night, he said the country is preparing for another year because the virus outbreak is getting worst. This is after all the debilitating restrictions currently in place for the last 3 months.

Make no mistake, I am not saying the US is going to experience the same as we have in Singapore. From what I have seen here, all countries in our part of the world are dealing with the outbreak in their way. All have been going through a time of adjustment that is universally agreed not to be good. Many businesses have collapsed, more will follow.

I am not saying the US will see the same as here. I will alway bet on the US to solve this kind problem over any other country, faster, and better. So fingers crossed. In the meantime, do not panic, do some work around the house rather than going out for the next several weeks, have even more sex. That is what we are doing to cope.

I tell all my Hedo friends this because I tried telling my work colleagues and family in the States what was coming two months ago, one month ago, last week, At the time it fell on deaf ears. Now they want to know more. Take what you want from our experience here.

Denny, I hope this post is ok for here but if not, I understand. Hope you are well.

Us Canadians have just been advised by our Chief Medical Officers when we are under 14 day self isolation we should not share a bed, bathroom or eating areas with any other household members... sex in the living room only I guess.

Did you see this? Does this mean what it sounds like? What does "visitors will be quarantined" exactly mean? Quarantined how?

KINGSTON, Jamaica – At a press conference today, Prime Minister of Jamaica, Andrew Holness announced that all travelers from countries where there is local transmission of Covid-19 will now be required to self-quarantine for up to 14 days.

Self quarantine means being by yourself with your travelling partner in a hotel room 14 days from arrival whether you booked a 14 day trip or not. First a taxi driver would take you from the airport to your hotel. Food will be room service only and left outside your door . Minimal or no contact with staff or any other guests at any time
during your stay. When you return home, you may be surprised to be told at the airport that EVEN IF you are not showing any signs of The virus ( mild cold symptoms for 88% of people) you MUST self isolate for ANOTHER 14 days at home. If during the 14 days at home, you develop the virus, then that is another 14 days at home from the time You show symptoms. You will be advised to go directly home and get friends or relatives to deliver food to your doorstep. The province in Canada I live next to (British Columbia next to the Pacific Ocean a very popular tourist destination ) announced yesterday that no matter that absolutely
NO tourists are welcome and need to voluntarily stay home. WestJet, the airline we were booked with for our postponed trip to Jamaica in April now is ONLY providing flights to bring any Canadians out of the country back to Canada immediately.

I have clients that arrived yesterday (Hedo and other resorts) and today have reported no changes due to the virus. However, that can change at anytime based on what we are experiencing here in the U.S. If I hear anything, I will post it.

Just an update --

I was VERY surprised that no one checked anyone's temperature or asked any medical-travel questions of anyone on our plane who landed at the Miami airport yesterday.

I was expecting 6 or 7 hour lines. Is Miami a rare exception to all this?

Respect.

Our trip with YSW for 3/21/2020 - 3/28/2020 was cancelled last week due to the Corona virus pandemic and we were super bummed. Just read this excerpt from the official announcement from Hedo and I gotta say they made the right call with regards to cancelling:

Quote
The Government of Jamaica has issued a proclamation that states, effective March 18 and until further notice, all visitors from countries that have experienced COVID-19 cases (including the United States and Canada) will be required to be placed in quarantine for 14 days immediately upon arrival. In the case of Hedonism II as it is with all other resorts on the island, the quarantine is defined as being restricted to your room only.

I love Hedo but being restricted to my room would have been... Less than ideal!

I'm still at the resort. There's a noticeable aggressiveness in getting people to use the hand sanitizing stations everywhere but especially in food areas (can't comment on the Playroom tho) and little things like the popcorn no longer being self-serve. Everything else is operating as usual - just with approx 50% occupancy. Hedo Amigos here now but they leave this weekend; Young Swingers cancelled, so aside from the few of us already here, next week will only have a handful of people at the resort. All bars and restaurants in town are closed but the three on property restaurants are functioning. I guess all this will change next week. For now I'm more concerned about the airlines.

Today is the 18th. Are Hedo guests from Covid countries now being asked to stay in their rooms by Hedo staff in accordance with Jamaican government orders? It would be great to hear from a guest who is actually there now - boots on the ground reporting.

Sure did, but the government order just became effective today the 18th not yesterday the 17th.

Go to this page and scroll down to the box with the Jamaican seal and the words Protocols of Management.

This is for the entire hotel industry.

My reading of the COVID-19 protocol for tourist entities is daunting.

The Protocol can be read from this website: https://www.jtbonline.org/wp-conten...9-UPDATED-V3-March-16-2020-as-at-9am.pdf It is 14 pages long.

Page 5 really sticks out: resort guests are to be restricted to their rooms for 14 days; no wandering around, no beach time, no evening shows or piano bar, no scuba.

Tables are to be setup outside of room doors for food and drink delivery.

A portion of an email from Hedo reads as follows:
"The Government of Jamaica has issued a proclamation that states, effective March 18 and until further notice, all visitors from countries that have experienced COVID-19 cases (including the United States and Canada) will be required to be placed in quarantine for 14 days immediately upon arrival. In the case of Hedonism II as it is with all other resorts on the island, the quarantine is defined as being restricted to your room only."

At least CharlieV has his own personal deck; wait, he has already been at Hedo for his 14 days. Will be interested in his posts for the rest of his stay.

Charlie, If you're still there, would be interested to know what it's like now (and over the last 10 days). Perhaps it's a decent place to relax during the various quarantine-type actions here at home? Be well all! smile

Or maybe the zombies got him.

All in all, I'd rather be a hippy.

Sorry - just catching up to all this. . . yes, I left Sunday March 22nd - about three weeks early. On one of the last flights to philly - now, the few remaining flights are to Ft. Lauderdale or NYC - some days only from Kingston. The hotel had six people remaining of the day before I left (Saturday) I posted some pics of the deserted resort on that Saturday afternoon to the "Our Favorite Resort. . . " FB page. Eerie to say the least. That Saturday nite we ordered dinner with the chef and the meals were individually prepared - no buffet. Although Winston and crew did a full show for the remaining guests - at Mr. Levee's request - a fun nite given the circumstances. The next day the place was somber to say the least. Beyond words. I have no inside scoop on when the hotel will be back in operation. Re-opening will not be simple - not from a staffing or infrastructure standpoint - they can do that no problem. But there's no way it will be business as usual - there will have to be social distancing and sanitary measures put in place that will be enforced by the government. Again, no inside scoop - just my version of common sense. Until a cure and vaccine are widely available, I can't imagine anything like a playroom, packed pool, packed piano bar being part of the program. Anything self-serve . . . won't be. Again, just my guess. The island desperately needs tourism back. . . but what we're used to doesn't fit the framework for a post Corona world. And, depending on timing, we might just get or official "Hedo Face Mask" at checkin along with our key. If we're still wearing masks in North America. . . they'll be wearing them down there. Just my guess.

Thanks Charlie for your "last days" of Hedo report. Sadly, I must second your conclusion that Hedo as we knew it is not possible till a proven highly effective vaccine or treatment or a spontaneous disappearance of the virus. This could take quite some time. While some may flock back as soon as the gates reopen, more risk averse (older and more vulnerable?) will logically wait for more certain safety. The owners have some serious challenges ahead unless medical technology or plain old luck comes to the rescue!

I sure hope they have the financial resources to ride out what could be a long storm.

We're booked for November. I clearly remember other pandemics, including filling out a form stating we weren't ill or had a fever. I think that was in 2009.

David and Qian post of March 16 detailing the situation in Singapore was prophetic! Thanks to them for the thoughtful warning.
