I just completed a trip 09 - 28 Dec 2019 and had a great time! I've prepared a Trip Report for Denny to post, should he decide to do so, that contains my comments and observations from my trip.

Denny: The TR should be in your IN box. If it's not for some reason, please contact me and I'll resend it.

Thanks for the report, Lyle. We were there during part of your time also and I agree with everything you wrote. The resort's management and employees are doing a great job.

Hi, Lyle. Sounds like our respective trips may have overlapped slightly; late last night, I returned from my annual New Year's Eve trip (12/26/19 - 1/3/20). In your trip report, you state:
Quote
Per the Hotel Manager, this is the busiest December they have ever had in the history of the hotel.

I can attest to that. On my last day, the GM was having a meeting with his managers in the main dining room and I overheard one of the managers report that this was the best December ever for the resort.

As far as this statement is concerned:
Quote
That’s great for their business and, in some respects, what’s good for the hotel is generally good for us as customers because it helps keep it a thriving resort for us to enjoy and may be helps keep the rates more reasonable.

I hope you are right about that. Unfortunately, there are many businesses that can tend to take their customers for granted and will try to get away with just about anything. Perhaps the current management of Hedo will be different.

Just my opinion...……… in the days of Super Clubs, Hedo was a cash cow they milked for everything they could get out of it, partly to offset the performance of some of the other resorts.

While Harry isn't the sole owner, he's the majority owner and it's the only business like this that he's running (so far as I know), so he only needs to worry about the financial health of this one property. Also, since he seems interested in perpetuating the business as a legacy (I've also heard rumors he intends to keep it in the family), I suspect he may be more inclined in running a healthy business with a continuing future, rather than just trying to squeeze all the financial performance out of it he can get.

Again, just my opinion and speculation...…….

Yes, Harry's trust leaves the resort to family with the caveat that it's current ambiance remains. (My words, not his, from an interview I did about 2 years ago.)

Hedo is in a tough business to be sure, but it has a firm hold on a niche market - as long as someone clueless doesn't get involved.

Hedo also needs to do something about that property next door (the old Point Village). Right now the Village is cool with the going-ons at the Nude end, but could you imagine if some "family friendly" franchise grabbed the land? You couldn't build a wall tall enough to give privacy and the lawsuits (aka with Sandals on the other side) would be messy.

Seems to me, if folks like to stay months at a time then a long term apartment rental from the Village might be in order. Slowly purchase the property one piece at time.

All in all, I'd rather be a hippy.

Well, that’s happening now...

Harry bought some of the Village units for overflow, and I’ve heard rumors other resorts may have also. I also know someone who rents there for several months during the winter.

Folks have tried to buy it outright, but there are a few condo owners there that won’t sell (at least, they haven’t been willing to thus far).

Lyle, your trip report also mentions something similar that happened to me on my recent trip:
Quote
I had a problem with the room safe a couple times and the Front Desk made sure it was corrected very promptly. I had several problems with the door lock to my room and again, the Front Desk made sure they responded very quickly to correct the problem ... Finally, the phone in my room wasn’t working.
First of all, I had a problem with the safe in my room as well; after several attempts at trying to get it to lock, I finally gave up.

That's when I tried to contact the front desk -- at which point I noticed there was no directory listing on the phone. So I tried just dialing zero; it rang several times before going to a busy signal (second problem). At that point, I walked to the front desk to report the problem; the gentleman working there assured me a manager would come to my room within a half hour to check out the safe (although I didn't really believe him). Upon returning to my room, I gave it another try; at this point, I was finally able to get the safe to lock, but found I had to press VERY hard in order for it to accept any input (the mechanism on the front that holds the digital display seemed to be loose). During a conversation with another guest, I mentioned this and he told me that he and his wife had the same problem.

Finally, I couldn't get the door to my room to completely lock; the latch seemed to be misaligned with the notch (add sexual innuendo here). Again, I gave up, but didn't report the problem to the front desk.

Those same safes have been in the rooms for a long time; they may be due for replacement.

I haven't had any trouble with door locks (past the usual card issues) or the safe in years. I usually book H-block.
Did anything look like someone tried to jimmy it?

No signs of tampering. It worked great the first week, malfunctioned for several days, then worked OK the rest of the trip. I was there one of the times a tech came to work on it and they looked it over pretty well and didn't find any obvious signs of damage or tampering.

Over the past couple of years we have had problems with the safes not registering the number we key. We've had the tech come and work on it and also had luck with just waiting a few minutes and trying again. I too think they need replacing.

In November our key cards stopped working. The maid's didn't work either. The tech took the lock apart and did whatever it is they do. That didn't work either. He left and came back with what looked like a completely new lock. I'm glad it was just after breakfast and not at midnight!

Both locks and safes could use some updating.

We also had an issue with our safe, but it was fixed within a few hours after my call to the front desk.

On a connected subject my husband drew up a sketch to connect the USB charger station to the safe so you can leave your room with your phone/laptop charging in the safe. He gave it to Harry the morning we were leaving. Harry seemed to liked the idea when they talked. Hopefully he will implement it. I hear that the Royalton Resort have safes with USB ports in them already.

Another Royalton \ Grand Lido idea is slowly being implemented as well, a wrist band that unlocks the door. I never did figure out how to phone the front desk in Dec but I was pleased to just punch in my friends 4 digit room number on the phone to be immediately connected to their rooms.

My phone had 300 messages on it and wouldn't take any more. Every day the front desk tried to leave another one: I asked why, they said it was just a survey to see if I was satisfied with the room.

I never turned my cell on the entire trip, and only had to charge my laptop.

All in all, I'd rather be a hippy.

Just curious: did anyone who stayed during the past month complete a comment card upon check-out? I'm asking because I was not asked to do so -- perhaps for the first time I can recall. Did they stop doing the paper comment cards in favor of online forms or was this just the oversight by the person at the front desk who handled my check-out?

Just an oversight. Paper comment cards still there. AND: during the Wed. night repeater drawing, they made a big deal out of pulling a previous week's one for additional $ toward next trip even though the guests weren't there (comment card had an email for contact purposes). I think that's b/c some of were doubtful the drawings were actually done. Apparently they are!

I completed one when I checked out. The front desk person didn't mention it, but I figured it was just an oversight...……..

Why is management's count on the number of stays different then our actual stays at Hedo?

It might be worth asking management to check on how many trips you "officially" have listed.
On my last trip they somehow reverted my home address to a place I moved out of 13 years ago. So, the data on file might not be accurate...

Happy Cpl: They'll change their records if you can prove you were on more trips than they have recorded.

Something similar I noticed during check-in: although the form they gave me had my correct (current) home address, it had an old e-mail address I literally hadn't used in decades. I drew a line through it and entered my current e-mail address, but who knows if it'll ever get updated in their records?

Might be hard to do in my case -- I've been going since the 1980's and somehow didn't manage to keep the receipts. It never dawned on me I'd be subjected to an IRS-type audit.

Maybe having the stamps in your old passports will help? Old credit card statements of payments to a TA or Hedo? I don't think the resort kept good files before 2000.

If you are talking about the number of trips that qualify towards a win for the most trips if you have won previously, they exclude the trip that you USE the winning voucher on. Also, if you were comped a trip for some reason, that would be excluded from being counted for a win also.

We finally won on our last trip in November. We've had the highest number, by our count before, but Lorna told us they don't count pre 2000 trips. I know at one time they had that information because I saw it. They had a record of every visit we had make to a Super Club. I suspect they replaced the old Super Club system and didn't carry over all the records. Old passport stamps may convince them. I never thought about that.

Judy, I >think< they count the trip where you are using your winnings IF some of the days were paid...but I've been wrong before. Maybe Denny can clarify.

I had that discussion with Hedo recently...…………. they way I understood their explanation, was it was trips since you used a prize and they made no distinction about whether that included any paid days or not.

I can't give anyone a definitive rule interpretation. The resort seems to change their interpretation from time to time.

My clients can check with me for trips booked through me and/or Go Classy Tours. I can check their database.
