I was reading a thread on the Hedo FB page and there was discussion of the music at the nude pool. People were saying that it is now "RAP CRAP" being played loud. Can any of the recent people here confirm or correct this? Is Hedo management actually playing rap music now at the pool? Has the mood shifted away from the more sexy fun music of yesterday? Do "groups" actually take over the pool with microphones and such? Feeling disappointed....

Admittedly, it was last October we were there, but at that time we thought the music was great. We thought the volume was perfect. It seemed to us they had struck that balance of loud enough to get up and dance, but not so load that you could not carry on a conversation.

As far as the type of music being played; this also seemed to be better to our ears. We like old music, but we also like current hits and most everything in between. I remember the first time we went to Hedo, 5 or 6 years ago. We heard 'Mustang Sally' 5 times. That was 5 times more than I had heard that song in the two decades before that first trip. Yes, a fine song. But the music verity that trip was none existent. And it felt a bit tired. Again, personal opinion.

Last October they played rap, techno, trop-rock, oldies, reggie, classic rock, a bit of everything. All good party music. And they were taking requests. So if there was a special song you wanted to hear, it got played. If I had to be critical; maybe they over did it a bit with Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. But I am not being critical.

Groups while we were there did bring in DJs. But they were good. See above.

We do not mind rap music. A lot we like. I have recently been working my way through Kanye's catalog, and I cannot believe I have not listened to it sooner. If you are going to Hedo and hoping to listen to 'Mustang Sally' five times, maybe not. But I am sure you could request it and get it played. And I am sure people would enjoy it!

The music choice and volume varies with who's in charge of the DJ booth. Last April some guests moved to the prude pool...now nude too with attentive bartender...to be able to talk while in the water b/c the nude pool was way too crowded (human gene pool) and too loud. At least options exist, I guess!

Hi Chris, thanks for you're note! Are you saying the Hedo management lets guests run the DJ booth? Is it that "groups" are now in control of the mood? Is that a fair assessment? Who if anyone manages this very important role in the areas environment? I guess hanging out at the prude bar is fine, just seems like that is a shame for us older peeps to have to migrate away....

The ECs staff the Music at the nude pool and the music tends to track the tastes of a bunch of young ECs. Sometimes when there is a large group in house, there will be periods during the day when they will be authorized by the resort to have their own DJ control the music. In general, guests don’t control the music.

last November the noise was controlled by the DJ for some large groups. Music was rap and ear shattering. Enough that it made us reconsider going back.
Mid day socializing was one of the highlights of our being at Hedo.

Those that like and don't like the music need to mention that on their comment forms at the resort.

Or use the online comment form on my web site to make management aware of your likes and dislikes.

As others said...some groups bring in their own DJs for music during the day...some good, some too loud. And the ECs are absolutely too loud. We haven't had much luck changing the volume with requests or comment card comments. Alas! Loud music was the reason lunchtime in the dining room got so awful about 10-15 years ago, but with no lunchtime spin games anymore, it's almost too quiet! Reggae (gently) in the background would be lovely in the dining room for meals...again, comment cards don't always work unless a lot of us chime in.

A more immediate potential remedy is to talk directly to Winston about the problem if the ECs are running the music, since they work for him, or talk to Donna Grant about it. Either of those may get a more direct and immediate response than a comment card or just posting about it on social media. Just a suggestion...

One can talk to Winston, Donna Grant until they are blue in the face about the excessively loud music. Nothing will be done. Then there's the comment form when you depart, and the loud music will be waiting for you upon your return visit.

I usually have good success when talking with either of them about things like this..... if the ECs are involved, Winston will respond if he knows there’s an issue. Just my experience...

Must be a different Hedo. Only time it's quiet at the pool is when the dj is not there. Very loud when the fluffs bring their dj. Just our observations.

There is nothing quite like a raging hangover on 5 hours of sleep on four beef patties and cold fries as blasting rap music in indecipherable patois ..."Ah, yabba, Jah yabba, no jah gabba dhobbah no jah ya yoh dabba. . . . " I sometimes wonder what the tree frogs think of all this.

Let's face it. The torch has been passed at Hedo and this is just one symptom. Comment cards and talking with ECs is worthless when the resort is committed to a change of target customer.
The new target customer wants to wake up to the lilting lyrics of ."Ah, yabba, Jah yabba, no jah gabba dhobbah no jah ya yoh dabba. . . . "

I'm pretty sure most of the new people don't think much of it either.

Might it be done deliberately as a passive-aggressive way to annoy the tourists swarming their country? Some of them see us as rich fat bastards who are just in country to do drugs and remind them of the past.

People are people after all.

We are at Hedo the end of January and the beginning of February every year since 1990. There are several groups in attendance during this time frame. We are not part of a group although there are usually 10-16 of us. We head to the nude pool right around 10:00 in the morning when the bar opens. There is usually a Hedo DJ manning the booth and he plays a variety of music at a good volume. If it gets a little loud he will turn it down if we request it or turn the speaker in a different direction. We usually leave the pool when the "guest" DJ takes over. We are all in the 55-65 age group and like a variety of music so the music played by the guest DJ's isn't much of an issue. For us it's the volume. Screaming at the bartenders and using sign language to communicate amongst ourselves gets old real fast. We just migrate down the beach and use the prude pool bar. It's good to have alternatives.

During our Hedo trip last October, the guest DJs were Mark Maze from Tom's Trips, and Mark from Topless Travel. Topless Travel Mark was actually doing his own DJ'ing for the first time, as he was also hosting the Topless Travel pool party. Both these guys are fine DJs. Requests were taken. Variety of music was good. Even Maze, who in the past his only default had been classic rock, was mixing in recent hits of different genres. Both were taking requests, and the volume was fine.

Maze and Mark are, I think, the best at what they do at Hedo. So maybe they are more aware of what the crowds want. I would always suggest any ways; go in October while Tom's and Topless are there. They are great groups. The music is now just another reason.

Sounds like you pick your group (or no-group) to have a say in what music is played.
If your vacation schedule allows that, problem solved.

Respect.

Please keep in mind that the message board rules that you agreed to when joining this board ask that you not mention other travel agencies. I'd rather not advertise for them when they don't advertise for me on their web sites.

Thanks.

I can't imagine people asking me "Why do you go to Hedo", and me replying, "For the music". smirk

That being said, I don't mind exposure to other musical experiences as long as there is variety (I do like to hear a steel band at dinner though).
Any idea what is playing this next Spanksgiving?

I don't know whats playing at Spanksgiving but when we return to Hedo end of Nov 2019... I am very much looking forward to the AC/DC tribute band, the friend who told me about it was horrified by the news.We are both thrilled that LIVE WYYA a famous Jamaican band will be returning early December! And ofcourse I LOVE Mark Maze !!! He can play all the classic rock he wants!

Talking to the DJ and/or ECs on the spot is typically effective.... tailoring your delivery as appropriate. Asking to crank it down a bit is always the right first request. If that doesn't work, stating flatly that "it's way too loud, and if it doesn't get turned down, I'm going to get the general manager down here" was remarkably effective the one time things were really outta hand. smile (Of course, if everyone else is having a great time and I'm the only one offended.... then it's time for me to head to the prude pool!)

How NOT to show your disaproval of the music being played at the nude pool.....do not mildly electocute the guy playing the guitar plugged into the amp by shooting your super soaker water guns directly at the offending guitarist while complaining loudly. I am not kidding. This actually happened. Only at Hedo. The guitarist only got a few mild zaps. Mark Maze has experienced the same thing by accident while DJing at the nude pool when splashed water hit him. Precautions have been taken since that time.

Lyle is correct: the House DJ's report to Winston (and by default, Donna Grant - Winston's boss). The guest DJ's will respond the their respective group's wishes and the leaders of the group. Theoretically, the hotel does have leverage but I'm guessing less so than with the direct staff. The issue is that people come to Hedo for a variety of reasons: some to party their brains out (like me in my 20's,30's,40's 50's) and others to chill (like me in my 60's). It's difficult to make the case that the music is "too loud" or "lousy" when the pool is full of people having a blast. The house DJ's typically play from a set of canned playlists on the iPod but sometimes will get creative if they're trying something new to get the audience reaction. They'll also respond to requests - so some of what you'll hear is another guest's favorite song. For better or worse. I've gotten response from Winston when I've asked for more reggae. I also torture the EC's at the Prude Pool to play more reggae with decent results. The best I can get with the guest DJ's is to get them to turn the speaker in the booth more toward the center of the pool and not shooting down the beach. Good luck -but don't just complain here - make your voice heard at the resort too!

A few years ago we were in the restaurant and they were playing the Bee Gees Greatest Hits album in it's entirety! The Bee Gees! I went to the front desk and politely pointed out that Jamaica is one of the few places on in the world that can be credited with creating an entirely new musical genre and that Jamaica has some of the greatest music ever recorded. They were nice enough to change it. Hopefully they also deleted those files.

Music is such a matter of personal taste...I didn't like the BeeGees in the 1970s, but I like it now. Go figure. I would've gotten a kick out of hearing the BeeGees, to be honest.

Good one, Parrot! In my dotage, I'm thinking "staying awake" past 10pm is my mantra (at Hedo at least...). I don't always make it these days.

Bee Gees would have been a relief compared to some of the crap they play. One my gripes is the the jerks that bring the super soakers. These idiots just start blasting people they don't even know.

In the 1990s many Hedo guests used huge slings to shoot boats with water balloons...until people started getting seriously injured. At the time I thought hitting the boats was hilarious, but in retrospect I'm embarrassed and saddened that people were actually hurt. I think the same mentality is going on with the super soakers. Just add alcohol...bad decisions occur. Not an excuse by any means. Just what I see as a Hedo reality.
