Hi fellow Hedo II fans. After a 10 year absence, we're heading back home in October.

How big of shock should I be prepared for? How different do you think it'll be after all those years?

Either way, I don't care - just happy to be returning to such a special place.

Wait....resort wifi and room TV's? sick That's the only part I'm not sure I like. Oh, and they removed trees?

You'll be very pleased with the rooms, facilities & food. All have taken a significant turn for the better, thanks to an infusion of cash and good sense by Harry Lange, the new owner. The atmosphere is nearly identical to 10 years ago. PDAs are more common and basically allowed. There are more younger guests than in the past - still predominantly 40s & up, but maybe twice the percentage of 20s & 30s vs. 10 years ago. There have been some trees removed, but most of the landscaping is about the same. The bamboo grove is much more nicely tended. The beach pools are heated. The beach grills serve wider menus all day. There are a bunch of other misc updates, that you'll enjoy. smile

Hi Chad,

You're in for a shock all right but it'll be a good shock. Two years ago we returned after a twelve year absence and found a beautiful, really fixed up resort. Beyond the physical improvements it seemed as though the people working there appeared much happier in their jobs and it showed.
The changes were all positive to make it amazingly better. What also changed were the guests. Those of us who have gone for a really long
time will notice that. One can never go back, really, but for those of us who have loved Hedo for a long time it's still magical.

As for the physical changes:

The trapeze is gone (was it already gone 10 years ago?)
The water slide is gone
The climbing wall is gone
The spa is the Romp Room at night (is that the correct name?)
Smoking is not allowed under any roof, and even in a few open air places (the courtyard)
The lobby area is all changed
There is a dressing room behind the stage

Respect.

The more you look, the more you see.

smoking restrictions conform to Jamaican smoking laws.
there is a new a la carte eatery called Flame that, during the day, is the clothing optional beach grill
wifi is improved in most areas
guest monitoring cameras have been installed
new dive boat
Japanese eatery has a separate section that sells non-teppanyaki style meals
new stair case added to the spa
new sidewalks added
designated smoking sections added (ask where that are)
piano rebuilt
buffet food area area rebuilt
lobby area rebuilt
tennis hut is new
may see watersports moved around
all (I think) the rooms have been rebuilt with cabinets that actually close without sticking; fantastic new show in the bathroom; door to bathroom now slides closed
clothing optional grill expanded
nude grill expanded
no longer have towel cards and towels are plentiful.
there is a program that encourages you to not recycle room towels and turn off AC when not in room which has prizes each night during the week
no longer need reservations for any eatery
there is a for-fee coffer bar
there is a for-fee enhanced wine cellar
there is a for-fee wine bar
stage is larger and dance floor is smaller.
smoothies for breakfast
6 Jamaican dishes at every buffet meal

If this be a dream do not wake me up; if not a dream, wish me no sleep

On the negative side, we had not been there for about 10 years. Went back last Nov.
Nude Pool area was completely dominated by one large group. Had microphone and ran participation games mostly directed toward their members (or so it seemed).
Resort was still great, but we felt cut off from the socializing that we remembered so fondly in that pool.

It should be mentioned that the new bathrooms (if you get one) have a large glass door. The morning sun comes into the room if you don't do something to cover the little bathroom window (which is also modern glass now). So take a 2 foot square piece of cardboard and tape if you like to sleep in.

I've thought about taking a curtain kit and doing a proper install, but I don't know if management would approve. smirk

All in all, I'd rather be a hippy.

An easier solution to ease of sleeping in daylight hours is to bring a sleep mask which can also come in handy for other purposes!

Instead of cardboard, we bring a paper grocery bag (easy to cut to shape into place) and blue painters tape to attach it to the bathroom window. If I wore a mask to block the light, I'd feel like Tommy from the Who rock opera--I already tape my mouth closed (can you say happy husband?) at night.

We attend during the end of January/beginning of February time frame so some of this may or may not be true at other times of the year.

Overall, many positive changes to the resort:
- Better infrastructure (rooms, water, power, walkways)
- Better booze in the bars.
- Water available in many locations.
- Functional and working sailboats, kayaks, paddle boards, snorkel and dive boat.
- More outside nightly activities.
- More chairs and pads available.
- Better footing around pools with slip free tiles.
- More food available during the late night/early morning hours.
- Jerked chicken available more hours.

Some take it or leave it changes:
- The lobby, court yard and upper pool area much more sterile now with zero foliage.
- Food is less tasteful with minimal seasoning.
- Food is kept barely warm with ineffective sterno heating fuel cans.
- Replacement of the 14/3 plan with the 12 day/$700 plan.
- More open PDA

Some negative (in my opinion):
- The cost has gone up drastically. Don't mind paying for improvements but it could be stretched out more.
- Finding more people who feel it is their job and obligation to enforce rules instead of letting the resort handle it.
- We usually head down to the nude pool around 10:00 am and enjoy the Hedo games (usually trivia), have drinks, chat with the bartenders, talk among ourselves and with others while listening to the reggae music in the background. Relaxed atmosphere. Usually leave around 1:00 - 1:30 when most of the groups bring in their guest DJ, crank the volume to 10 (because there is no 11), and start yelling "lets get this party started" totally distorted into the microphone. I understand they are aiming for a younger crowd and this may be your cup of tea but just pointing out difference from 10 years ago.

Must be something in the air. I too am returning this October after ten years away. We did do an evening pass a few years ago but I'm looking forward to the visit. It will be trip 14 since 1998.

We did a couple of day passes after a long absence and were very pleased with the improvements we saw since SuperClubs allowed the place to fall into disrepair. It was strange having Gus banished to the prude beach, but we did go visit. The new music/DJ structure takes up some of the already limited pool deck area and also is so loud it was hard to have a conversation in the pool or hot tub, but times change. smile

Chris in VT - I hope you both are well! We took your advice and have been vacationing on the cliffs for many years now, primarily at Rockhouse and Catcha. Love the vibe up there! You were right! smile All the best!
