The following was received in an email from Thomas who is at the resort currently. Pictures can be viewed here.

- main dining room is thoroughly demolished. We saw them building new cinder block walls in there today
- all tile has been removed around the pride pool
- check in is still over by the gift shop behind the wine bar
-dining under the tent, prude grill and pastafari's has been fine
-service has been excellent. The staff is really working hard.
-disco is open
-water slide should be open but can't confirm
- catamaran cruise tomorrow is free plus the driving tour to ricks Thursday
-discounts at the store are 20%
- people have been given vouchers when they check out for 1 or 2 free days for the inconvenience.
- they were adding steel beams to the roof of the disco Sunday

People are having a great time regardless of the construction.

Thanks Denny! I am certainly impressed at the willingness to spend $ to continue to improve things at Hedo. I suppose it's a good idea to take care of whatever you own if you want it to maintain it's value. It's nice to see the owners caring more about their investment than the last owners did!

Looking at the pics, I gotta think this would have been an ideal time to close for a while so that no guests had to deal with it. Hopefully everyone who has been there during this had a good idea of what the state of the resort would be during their stay.

Thanks for the pics and update!

It's been fine. The tent on the beach, prude grill and Pastafari's
have been able to feed everyone. The staff has really been
doing a great job. Pastafari's is open for breakfast as well as
dinner. Honestly we like eating on the beach better then in
the dinning room. The Dining room construction will be done by
10/3 when the resort is supposed to be full (per Harry tonight at
the repeaters party).

Steel beams did you say? Does this mean we could see a return of the disco-roof hot tub?

All in all, I'd rather be a hippy.

People currently there and those just returning, as Denny posted, are having a great time despite the renovations. It is those that are not there that are blowing the whole thing up more than they need to.

So how many free nights are they giving everyone? Is there other compensation being offered besides free nights? Is it automatic for anyone there during the construction or is it something you have to go and push for? Anyone know the policy or procedure they are using? Those who just got back, there now, or going very soon should be in great position to share some info on this.
Thanks!

We got there on the 10th and just the lobby was under construction. They upgraded us from the prude garden, the least expensive when we booked to nude garden (H block)complimentary. The very next morning there was a plywood wall that came all the way around to the top of the disco and water slide. Tuesday was the last day the water slide was open. They gave us 2 nights to use in August and September of 2016. They were also giving the catamaran cruise, either daytime or sunset as a comp as well. We left on the 20th and as far as I know they were still doing the cruise as a comp, not sure about the free nights tho

We have spoken with a couple friends that just returned, in their opinion the inconvenience is minor and that people who haven't even been are blowing it out of proportion. They noted the same freebies as noted above and said the service and entertainment were off the hook. There have been tons of complaints on this board about the condition of the resort, and now that they are trying to improve it, many of the same people are complaining about that. Can't we tolerate a little short term pain for the overall improvement of the resort?

Our friends said that Harry reinforced his commitment that the improvements would be done before the Hedo anniversary, and that they are on schedule, they said that Harry also mentioned that the resort was not closed due to cash flow and not wanting to lay off all the employees while the construction took place.

Only those with lack of sound business knowledge would suggest that a resort shut down for what amounts to major renovations to a VERY SMALL portion of the property. They maintain a cash flow, it's their slow season (minimizing the number of guests inconvenienced, if they are at all) and keeping their employees with income. If you haven't noticed over the last 2+ years since new ownership took over ... they appear to know what they are doing.

Yes. They put steel beams in and extended out the roofline over the disco. I need to download the pictures and send to Denny. I'm not sure what the plan is for it, but Harry promised the area would be done in time for 10/3.

Does anyone know what changes are being done to the dining area?

I'm also told that a concrete paver surface has replaced the dangerous, slippery tiles on the pool deck.

Harry is still saying that all will be open by Saturday. It may still need some finishing touches or they may have to put in the old tables and chairs but he says it will be open. The courtyard wasn't affected by this latest round of renovations.

The resort has put up a page with some information about the renovation progress complete with a slideshow. Looking good!

Looks great, and for all but furniture arriving looks to be on schedule, considering the complexity of the project, the constant rain delays, etc. some pretty good planning on the part of the Hedo management team. Can't wait until December!!

We have just arrived back from our two week visit. Two weeks ago, I would have said that there was no way that the renovations could be completed by October. I have never seen so many workers work so quickly and harder than on this project. If this is working on Jamaican time, I am very impressed. The site looked like a bee hive with some workers literally running. As we left, the renovation seemed very near completion. I am not one of the koolaide drinkers but this will be a very beautiful renovation. I am so sorry that we did not take our camera. The weather was hot and humid during the afternoon but all the staff were in excellent form and smiling. We did have several nights with no AC but the technicians tried to fix it each morning. Everyone will, I think, be very impressed with the new look.

We arrived Hedo on Wednesday afternoon and were told the renovation would be done on Friday (today). Yesterday that was revised to Saturday (tomorrow).

All the construction fencing is down and the renovation looks very nice. I suspect they will be done on Saturday. T-38 is correct about the number or construction workers on site and the activity level.

The renovated dining hall opened Friday night. Although I have a couple comments on the design, I think it looks quite nice. The front lobby and reception desk were the biggest surprise. What a difference there. It is a 5-star lobby for sure.

Thanks for the updates, I know there were a lot of skeptics, glad to hear they were wrong. Can't wait until December to see the improvements for ourselves

Walked through the lobby again today, and the lobby still is the biggest surprise for me. Furniture was being placed in the lobby, and it keeps looking better.

I should make it clear that the lobby and reception are not open yet. Only the dining area is open. The relocated reception and tour desk areas are still in use. But the lobby must just be a day or two from opening.

I'm excited about the updates! Honest!

But since it's been much the same for so long, I'm worried in an old fuddy-duddy way that it won't feel like home anymore...like when mom washed the blankie and it just felt different.

It's already felt different because a lot of us old-timers were known by the staff...and so many are no longer there that we're working hard to acclimate the new staff to us.

I still like the old rooms...but am glad they are repainted and have better linens, etc. I do miss the light by the mirror though. I have no idea why it was removed. Drawers that glide more smoothly would help too, but alas, the old ones are still there.

First I would like to state that those that complained about the inconvenience due to the renovation work were not wrong. There was a great amount of irritating noise, much of the resort was blocked off and unusable, and just trying to walk from one necessary place to another in the awful heat and humidity was not enjoyable. Those that pointed out these issues were correct. But the management did give free nights and other things that helped ease the pain. I do think that management could have been a little more flexible in the use of the free nights. Perhaps, they could have allowed guests to extend their September stay using the nights rather than having to use them a year later. The resort was not even 40% full. But all of this is history. I, as Chris has expressed,am somewhat concerned about the old Hedo ambiance, but having seen the almost finished product, I think that we all will be very pleased. We travel a lot and from what we see, the renovated Hedo will compete with the upscale resorts in many ways while keeping what I call the "south seas" atmosphere. The main pool area, for instance, will be stunning…..and slip free! I suspect that Kevin was right in the middle of the renovation planning and just wait until you see the blend of bright blue skies, beautiful greenery and the white decking and railing. Kevin and the other planners are to be congratulated! I have a feeling that in the coming months and years, that there will be much more to come. i just hope that we will not be priced out of the market. Oh, I did get to meet and have a brief conversation with Harry. He seems like a real down to earth guy who was just a very nice person. And no favorites at this resort. I had just loaded up my plate of pizza and drinks to take back to our room while not being nude at about 2 am at the nude grill and was having my very brief conversation with Harry when a security guard interupped Harry and ordered me to leave or get nude. Harry reacted as any other guest might have by acting a little surprised and bidding me good night. I have never seen a resort owner act so humble and just plain nice. He is one of us!

I agree with T-38...Harry is no pompous ass. When he's a guest, he's a guest and acts accordingly. And he dances a lovely rumba.

The new updates to Hedo are simply stunning. Almost "over the top" in a funny way. Ghetto to gorgeous so to speak.

I would think the nude grill/bar is likely next. While there isn't a lot of real estate to work with, I'm sure they'll do something nice.

As to Harry...a great guy. He listens intently to guests as just blends in with the crowd if you don't know him. If you are a ballroom dancer, he loves to dance with guests on talent night.

Before the nude pool area is done, there is word that the prude beach pool and bar will be completely renovated or replaced. They want to have a place to move all the nudes to while the nude pool area is being worked on.

That could be very good. That area is highly underutilized at this time. Sure there are the vendors and an occasional volleyball game on the big lawn, but for the most part it is just something to walk across. I had to think for a while where the prude "beach pool" was.

I think that is one construction period I would not mind being there for at all - when the nude pool and bar takes over a nicely renovated prude beach pool and bar.

I agree with everyone about Harry. On our last trip, we socialized with him several times. He loves to hang out in his new wine bar, and he socialized with us as we all had some very good bottles of wine there. He is a great guy, and if you didn't know who he was, you would never know he was one of the owners of the resort. He always wants to know if everyone is happy, and of course we tell him yes, we are so happy to be there. Can't wait to go on our 11th trip this April!

We've also been impressed w/ Harry. Very nice, approachable, sociable guy. Fun to chat with. Makes sense that he was a successful executive in his former life. Hope we run into him again.

To say that Harry is "savvy" is a gross understatement of him.

I won't out his past but to say he knows what he's doing.

I wouldn't play poker with him..just sayin'

I can totally relate to this last tidbit. Late last February I was chatting with Harry and a few other Guests. This was my first solo trip and I decided to stroll down to the nude pool to check things out. I was still in my dress from my theme wear when security asked me to disrobe or leave. Harry looked at me and said something about of all people I should know better...since I work for them. We both had a chuckle and I quickly obliged the security officer.

Harry, as I have said is a very nice guy. However, the attendant at the wine bar could use some lessons in hospitality. My wife and I stopped in for our first visit to a totally empty place. We took maybe five minutes to look at the wine list and also looked at a copy of the Wine Spectator to compare choices. Before we could make a choice, the attendant rudely told us to leave since we were not drinking. Pretty low class in my opinion. We will not be returning to the wine bar. Again, we were the only people in the wine bar. Selecting a wine is not the same as selecting a bottle of beer. We enjoy finding a bottle of wine that is well listed in the Wine Spectator that an establishment has on their list and that we have not had before. We even discussed some of the available wine with the attendant so she knew that we were serious about the selections. We had limited our choices to those rated in the Spectator at 89 or higher. These would have cost in the $100 range. Low class indeed!
