I just returned last night from a visit to Hedo and here’s a snapshot of my observations:

Food – Overall better than I remember it being in a long time. Despite several groups being there, my impression is that food quality and variety had nothing to do with the groups and this is probably a current positive trend in the food.

General Conditions – The resort looked good to me overall and it appeared to me like they are concentrating a lot on the little things every day to make it that way. Overall, I thought it appeared to be a good trend.

Staff – I talked to a lot of the staff privately about stuff. Overall, they seem to be working hard, sound like they’re happy with their jobs, and genuinely interested in doing a good job and keeping the guests happy.

Phones – Still a bug in the new phone system. (Hard as this may be to believe……) The new phones appear to be a VOIP system and the phone (at least in my room) is installed on a bedside table where a cable comes out of the wall that appears to be a computer cable. Because of the phone type, it needs to be plugged into an electrical outlet to work. That outlet is on the wall switch next to the door that turns the lights beside the bed on and off. SO, unless you make sure to leave that wall switch turned on and use the switches on the lamps to turn them on and off, the phone won’t work.

Sales / Reservations – There are internal coordination and communication problems that need work.

That’s my summary ……………….

DENNY – Trip report soon come

Thanks for the summary, looking forward to reading your full report. That's an interesting observation on the phones, I will keep that in mind when we visit in October!

That is so typical of the Jamaican thought process.

I honestly don't think this was due to the "Jamaican thought process". I've seen this sort of thing happen lots of times elsewhere when systems modifications are made a piece at a time. The computer wiring was installed in the rooms where it was reasonably easy and affordable to do so. The new phones appear to be VOIP type phones, so they need to be near the computer cable, or run a cable across the room. Because of the phone type, they need to be plugged into an electrical outlet. The most convenient place to put the phone was next to the bed, and all the outlets in that location are controlled by the wall switch. This problem likely got overlooked because the lights were probably on in the room when the phones were installed and checked out. Now that the problem exists, short of rewiring the room, there's probably not an easy or cheap solution to the problem.

Just a PS to earlier remarks.....

I used Rocky's Taxi & Tour Service for round trip ground transportation between the airport and Hedo. I thought the service provided was excellent, very professional, and I highly recommend them if someone is looking for good ground transportation.

Too bad that there are *still* ongoing issues w/ sales & the front desk. That's been one of the weakest links at Hedo for years now. Harry/Jon/Kevin - take note.... Since they interact with almost every guest, and are the go-to focal point for guests' issues, that should be the #1 place to improve training/staff.

Just to clarify.......... the Front Desk staff were on top of everything and there was NO problem with the Front Desk or the services they provided. I think they're doing a good job.

Lyle, it's great you had a nice time. We had friends at Hedo about the same time as you that told us the infrastructure problems (related mostly to room problems) as well as dealing with the front office was still problematic.

Something interesting...our friends recently back from Hedo were covertly begged to write a nice trip report on Tripadvisor.com and other blogs by front office staff. Our friends witnessed other guests being asked to do the same thing. Words to the wise, beware of overly complementary trip reports on Tripadvisor.com lately and in the near future as this may be a strategy on Hedo's part to suppress honest feedback to the public.

Sadly for guests, it's too bad that Hedo does not put its efforts fully toward fixing problems rather than asking guests to not be totally honest in their internet trip reports.

Hedo personnel have been doing this for some time. Do managers promise the guest any incentive for writing the good reports. It seems that some of these writers are very careful about being misunderstood. I find it interesting and somewhat amusing to observe a former Hedo RM at another resort soliciting good TripAdvisor reports from guests. She always asks the guests to mention her specifically and to attribute certain nice traits to her. Thus one can usually tell which trip reports have been solicited by her. Kevin,Hedo GM, advises one to discount the top rated reports and the bottom rated reports and to take note of the others. Good advice!

I did post a TripAdvisor review, but was not solicited by anyone at Hedo, or anyone else, to do so and the words in it are what I really think about the visit....... just an FYI.

I have never been asked to write a glowing review on TripAdvisor as I was leaving. In fact, I was never asked to write any type of review by anyone associated with the resort.
