Since Hedo stopped using plastic straws and paper ones have not yet arrived, stirring drinks is impossible without your finger. Would've been nice to have wooden stir sticks or the b'tender stirring them...sigh!

Saw some guests with metal straws with rubber tips to protect tooth enamel.

Paper straws are hard to come by since so few mfr make them...prediction of a booming biz as people become more aware of the burgeoning plastics problem in the world.

Grand Lido Negril has paper straws if requested.

Be wicked for a week - but don't damage the environment with a plastic straw! That's beyond the pale!!

I've heard Pasta straws are a thing, and you can get re-usable bamboo straws.
Changes are a commin.

This is where I draw the line. As much as I appreciate the bartenders at Hedo, I don't want them stirring my drink with their finger (or any other appendage).

We'll likely just make sure that we bring those insulated cups that have the reusable straws attached. We already bring our own insulated cups with lids that you can drink through, and can be closed for shaking to mix a drink.

If using the resort cups, you can just pour the drink back and forth between two cups to mix it.

It might be interesting to see how Hedo addresses this situation.

Paper straws were the norm MANY years ago (long before Hedo) and were replaced by plastic straws when manufacturing technology made extruded plastic straws much less expensive. Paper straws are readily available, but MUCH more expensive than the plastic straws (or other types of non-plastic straws) that are available. Considering how many straws a place like Hedo uses in a day typically, even a small unit cost increase adds up to a lot of cost very rapidly. They may decided to just go straw-less permanently...…..

Imagine a bar that charges $5 a drink, but won't include a paper straw because it would be too "expensive". And yet the damage to the fishing industry is already in the Billions.

Priorities are out of wack these days.

I was referring specifically to the Hedo situation and what they may do in response to this issue.

Good call IMO. It's lousy seeing a sea turtle w/ a straw stuck in its throat. We've switched to paper. smile

Jake, if only a single plastic straw were at issue....sigh!

It's all the straws together that are breaking the camel's back (hey hey, I combined a metaphor with a cliche! whoo-hoo!)

Granted, yes, we all crap up the environment in many little and big ways, but making any effort in any way is better than not addressing it. Not everything (all actions/choices) has to solve problems 100%. I'm okay with no plastic straws. Just need to stir my drinks--a solvable crisis.

So I see that they also make "100% compostable plant-based plastic straws" that apparently hold up just as well as normal plastic straws in drinks. They would be a good alternative for the resort to stock, as long as they don't pass the cost to us customers. If not, I'll bring some myself, they're inexpensive (saw a 200 pack online for $10 bucks).

I guess the next thing coming down the pipe is environmentally friendly sun tan products. The amount of that stuff getting washed into the ocean every year would fill a super tanker (or two?).

Things that are "environmentally friendly" (I know the term is overused), work well, and are a wonderful business opportunity for startups. Gotta keep the big companies on their feet!

Drink your rum straight! More healthy without the mixers and better for the environment without the plastic straws. ;-)

Hedo is going for the cheap. No straws, canceled the 14/3 are they hurting for money? What's next? Bring your own toilet paper.

Actually, we used to bring our own TP because we got sick of the little balls of paper that ended up on our genitals....the quality has gotten better though this last year.

We started going to Hedo late 90's, what I remember about the TP is my thumb popping through when wiping.

My fav TP memory is when a gal walks into the piano bar and says hi to me (I'm seated near the door) by lifting her leg and lots of shredded toilet paper was hanging from her not shaved that evening pudenda. I mentioned she might want to do a bathroom check and she ran off to fix herself up. Ooops! It happens to all of us, yes?

@Chris_in_VT - agree. Just got back last night. It appears that Hedo is not exactly making the full commitment to be sans plastic -- e.g., the nude grill still uses the plastic utensils. Not sure how they might be able to circumvent that, though, so I guess they will likely continue (unless there are reusable plastic utensils?).

As far as the straw situation, I saw on both Amazon and Bed, Bath & Beyond web sites that they sell packs of metal straws with cleaners. Weird having to pay for something that's normally included, but it might be an alternative. Also, if you bring a pack with you, you could hand them out to other folks -- could be a good conversation starter and way of making friends.

It'd be great if they switched to regular stainless silverware at the beach grills. Heck, they already wash the plates & glasses.... wink For straws, it'd be nice if they had paper ones available to take if desired. Then again, folks seem to be pretty lazy about leaving butts, straws, forks, etc. on the beach.... so the less disposable stuff, the better I guess.

I expect metal straws would still be a problem - they can get stuck in an animals throat, or your foot.
Bamboo would be a better choice, at least it breaks down after a while.

Good point -- what I failed to make clear in that previous post was that I was merely suggesting the metal straws as a temporary workaround. I agree bamboo would be better.

One of the things that would help the 'plastic in the ocean' thing, is if people wouldn't leave their plastic cups, often with straws and stirrers in them, out on rafts or the tethered platform in the water or on the beach near the water. Over the years, I've picked up a lot of plastic cups out of the water or recovered them off of the platform because all that stuff ends up in the water and people either step on it or it ends up a problem for the critters in the ocean. I doubt Hedo plans to replace the plastic bar cups, but they don't need to end up in the water. The straws and stirrers wouldn't be as big a problem either if people would just be a little more vigilant about leaving them around where they don't belong. Just my two cents worth...……….

I do agree with Lyle 100%.

I remember in the 1980s and early 1990s at Hedo what slobs we were. Rafting in our shipwreck formations and blithely tossing our empty plastic cups with straws back toward the beach (with a little water in the cup for heft) because the beach crew was all over cleaning up after us constantly. Yes, we enjoyed the decadence of that 'freedom', but the cost in retrospect was not worth it.

I do feel shame and now, as a more-aware consumer, try harder to do better for the world.

I know that each of our puny efforts to be as green as possible (or is it really: as convenient?) won't 'save' the world, but at least it's better than hurting the planet more (esp. now that we have more knowledge to base our choices on).

It's a bit mad though that the public is being shamed into not using plastic straws, when many countries still take all their waste to dump out at sea.

Maybe there's hope for the next generation?

We conducted fact-finding visits to various beach bars down the beach toward Negril and they were all using plastic straws and stirrers. Maybe soon, the local beach ‘entrepreneurs’ a Hedo will be selling contraband plastic straws....

Aside from just the sheer volume of something else that ends up in the water, there are two main problems with sunscreen - "non-reef safe" ingredients and propellants. A lot of places are banning non-reef safe sunscreen (oxybenzone and octinoxate cause bleaching of coral which kills the coral). The Key West city council just voted on Tuesday to ban the sale of such sunscreen starting in 2021. Many snorkel cruises in Hawai'i ban non-reef safe suntan lotion, but so far the state has not banned it, although I would expect them to do soon (they are working to essentially ban the sale of cigarettes now - raising the age you can buy them each year until in six years you will have to be over 100 to buy them). I am told Europe bans sunscreen with propellants - use can use a spray bottle that works with a pump trigger.
