The Jamaican gov't is thinking of creating bypass roads for Lucea and other towns in Hanover that slow down traffic (to Hedonism II). But they are also talking about making it a toll road!

I do too, but it must be lousy for the residents & local businesses to have the high volume of traffic.... and indeed it's a chokepoint. Probably beats the heck out of the road there too - requiring more frequent repair - and associated traffic snarls. It'd be a nice enhancement. We'll see if anything comes of it in the next few years. smile

This bypass has been 'discussed' for more than a decade.

What I find most interesting about the Observer story was this quote: "And the Prime Minister has taken that as one of his next thing to do, and I want to leave that to him, because I know when he takes on something, it will be done."

The PM said the same thing a few months ago about 'cleaning up' Falmouth so that cruise ship passengers would want to get off their ship and explore. So far, nothing of any significance has been done. And several cruise lines have removed Falmouth from their itineraries since the PM's announcements.

I hope that the bypass doesn't get built for a while. (Knowing Jamaica time it probably won't.) It was lovely driving through those towns and still feeling the Jamaican spirit. Every time we go I come away feeling admiration and respect for the kindness and sweetness of the people we've come to know. I would hate to miss that.

Hmmm, with all the new Spanish resorts being built (and indeed all the other development I saw in April), a new road will be needed sooner rather than later.

A new road was put into the north side of the island towards the old Hedo III. I was looking forward to taking it one day - but then Hedo III went away.

I hope that isn't repeated with Hedo II. eek

All in all, I'd rather be a hippy.

Several HUGE monsters are going / have gone in, along Half Moon Bay. Not to mention the Palladium you pass half way to the airport - all reputed to be of Spanish ownership. And I think the new Grand Lido to?

Anyway, the point is old roads and too many tourists are causing problems. It will only take a bad bus crash before the government will have to get involved.

Personally, I'd like to see a high-speed hydrofoil boat carry people from Mobay to Negril. Those working out of Sydney harbor (in Australia) are amazing.

All in all, I'd rather be a hippy.

If this new road does get built, I don't imagine it will be long before tourist traps pop up along it to take advantage of the flow of cash. The "local charm" will follow the money.

Grand Lido is part of Royalton which is actually owned by Sunwing Travel Group out of Canada.
The RUI Resorts (two huge ones on Bloody Bay) are owned by TUI Group now but were originally Spanish and are still headquartered in Spain.

The TUI group is based (and has always been based) in Germany; currently, the headquarters is in Hannover. Here is the company's history: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TUI_Group
TUI is an acronym for "Touristik Union International."

Sunwing, a Canadian company based in Toronto, is minority owned by the TUI Group (49 percent), a transaction that occurred in 2009.

The new Royalton Negril resorts are owned by Blue Diamond, a division of Sunwing, so TUI, a German company, is part of that picture.

———————————————-
The RIU resorts are owned by a Spanish company that, in turn, is owned by TUI.

———————————————-
The Palladium in Lucea is owned by A Spanish company.

The Karisma Hotel and Resorts company, owners of the Sensatori in Negril is based in the Dominican Republic and is incorporated in the British Virgin Islands. Karisma has a strong partnership with Thompson for marketing and reservation management. Thomson is UK based and is owned by TUI.
TUI owns the Sensatori brand.

Grand Bahia is a family owned company based in Spain.

Iberostar is owned by a Spanish company called Grupo Iberostar.

Royal Decameron is owned by a Panama-based company called Hoteles Decameron S.A.

Sandals, Couples and Jewel resorts are owned by Jamaican-based companies, some being privately held.
