With the recent wi-fi upgrades, what is the most convenient way to stay in touch with those left behind? We (while in Jamaica) and our kids at home will both have AT&T iPhones. We apologize in advance for our ignorance in this area, but will normal "texting" and long distance calling (every couple days) work, or will we run up significant international calling and data charges? What about FaceTime? We have no intent of spending long periods of time calling back and forth, but having a "plan" in place is important for us. What about test alerts/updates that currently are getting forced through to our phones (ie. weather and sports updates, etc.)? Last time we recall shutting off work email, etc., so as to avoid any associated (possible) roaming charges. Also, we'd prefer to use our own phones and account- rather than buying a phone/SIM card while there. Thanks, and any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

We both need to keep in contact with aging parents while on vacation. We use Skype while at Hedo, over Hedo's wifi. Using Skype over wifi, we do not have to pay for additional provider charges for international service.

We make our calls in the morning sitting in the courtyard and after, the computer goes into the safe for the day. We still like to exercise the Hedo 'no-contact-with-outside-world' lore of old....as much as we can.

Emergency calls are not possible and if something were to happen that you needed to respond too, for us there would be a day delay.

If you are more concerned about keeping in contact with home but do not want to keep too much in contact with home; with Skype, a person at home can send you a text message you will see when you do get online. With new free wifi in the room, just check Skype in the late afternoon before dinner. No need to call and talk.

As far as Hedo's wifi service; we have never had issues. We paid once for service for one day so I could use internet in the room. I needed to pay my US taxes. Our room was ocean view nude, way down by the nude pool. 2275 if you want specifics. Worked fine. Otherwise we have only used the free wifi in the courtyard, and Skype works fine there.

We use FaceBook Messenger for live chat when we have free wifi. If we need to call to talk it's $1.99 per minute for us (AT&T) which is reasonable for a few minutes of live talk if the messages don't suffice.

If your phone and your plan support WiFi calling, that shouldn't cost anything either. Just make sure your phone settings are set to "WiFi calling only" or "no mobile data" or however they phrase it in iPhones.

You can enable Wi-Fi calling on your phone as:

"Wi-Fi Calling from AT&T lets you talk and text over a Wi-Fi connection, even when cellular coverage is limited or unavailable."

My cell is a 3rd party phone, so Wi-Fi calling is not possible as you have to buy your phone directly from the provider (AT&T). I use Skype for this purpose.

My wife's phone has Wi-Fi calling. She turns off the cell network and turns on Wi-Fi calling. If you select "only update on Wi-Fi" it will keep your phone from doing updates when you don't want it to.

Verizon has a Travel Plan whereby you pay $10 for every 24 hour period you use it. You use your existing data plan and your allowable calls on your normal plan. You make calls just like you were here in the states and send and receive texts the same way. I have used it not only in Jamaica but also sailing around the BVI's as well as central Europe.

I've used that same plan. They also offered $40 for a month of the same use.
