Just wondering if I bring my laptop or my iPhone, will I be able to access my emails/calls (I run a small business and need to check in once a day).

There is free wifi in the courtyard area, you'll see other guests in/round that area doing work/checking emails/facetiming etc. I liked to sit on the nice comfy chairs at harrysans late afternoon checking email.

Not free in rooms, but wide-ranging free availability in courtyard and half the dining room. I was able to use it fairly easily for 10 days in a row this month.

Just a reminder to save you some hair tearing out, if your device has used the free wifi before, when that network comes up, delete it, the re-search for available networks. otherwise it will try to connect on the network using the IP address it had before and you will be throwing your device across the yard. Also, you may have to do this if the power goes out at all.

It's the same signal as is used for the paid wifi. You just get a code to login with at check-in. Sometimes it's great, sometimes it sucks.

I'm not sure this is correct, at least for my Android smartphone. IP addresses on a WiFi network are assigned dynamically by the router. As a prospective new client, your smartphone or laptop requests an IP address (connection) from the router. Then after some period of time with no activity your connection expires and that IP address is available for a new client to use.

I tend to believe that most WiFi connection problems have more to do with issues in the router than the do with my smartphone...

It's possible the router Lease Length is set too long, so some devices think they still can use the IP even when it's no longer available. Miss-configurations are always a headache.

All in all, I'd rather be a hippy.

I leave the info on my tablet...and when I return to Hedo I need to turn it on and it doesn't connect. But if I turn the whole tablet off and then back on I get the correct screen for free wi-fi.

Just got back from H2 a few days ago. The free WiFi in the courtyard is hit or miss. Many people were sharing tips on how to connect, the two weeks I was there. The strongest signal is near the gift shop, at -49dbm. The signal drops to about -60dbm at the fringe of the dinning room. Tips to connect include, 1 reboot your device, 2. attempting to connect to the paid WiFi, then just before the page were you give your billing information, cancel out, then try reconnecting to the free WiFi.
3. Reset your WiFi settings for the Hedo hotspot. 4. move to a different location in the courtyard.
Some days nothing worked.
It's not device specific, Android and IOS all had problems.

We sure hope Hedo offers free wifi in all the rooms some day soon. The infrastructure is already there, so how much, REALLY would Hedo have to increase the daily rate in order include it?

To be honest, I do not want free wi-fi in the rooms.

Here's why IMHO:

People will spend yet more time in their rooms instead of out making the ambiance of Hedo happen.

Hedo used to have a more group-oriented ambiance. Now with TVs, people are in the room more. Now with so many eating venues and pool options, they are spread out more.

People need to be clustered together to keep the ambiance of bawdy wackiness that Hedo used to have. But that's just because I miss that ambiance I guess.

Hedo isn't as silly or as campy as it used to be. Sex has become serious business. Whine whine whine.

My experience with the WhyFi: stayed in a room with an antenna in a tree right outside my window. Signal was week and the operational speed sucked. One measure is the transmission rate. Their network, when operating perfectly, should have allowed transmission of 54MB/sec; I was seeing 2 and most often just 1MB/sec. Frustrating.

We just stayed at another resort in Negril with free high speed internet throughout the resort for a fraction of the cost of Hedo. It's a shame this works so poorly and that you have to pay to have it in your room.

The last three years, we have stayed in one of the new NBJP rooms that come with free WiFi. I will tell you that I don't spend any more time in my room than I did before. I do like to be able to stream music from iHeart Radio from my iPad to my Bluetooth speaker. Never any problem with the streaming.

I guess Chris and I are cut from the same cloth. I love seeing old friends and making new ones when there but Hedo has lost some of its charm. Things like WiFi, TV's and multiple venues day and night have changed the vibe. Imagine all Hedo guests in the ocean everyday all day long. Imagine having to walk to the dinning room for lunch everyday. Imagine only one pool. Imagine only one dinning room. Sometimes progress is flawed.

I agree with Joe. Time changes everything. Look forward instead of looking back.

With all due respect, hearing people lament about great Hedo used to be is almost as annoying as people lamenting how great Hedo III was.

Our first trip was in 2003. Not near as far back as many people and it has changed a lot since then. But I still prefer to be exited about the new things to come. Change is inevitable.

Remember the good old days when no one had cars and everyone had to to ride horses to get around? I miss those days because I love horses so much. (Tongue in cheek, of course)

We haven't been in two years but trip #12 comes this fall. We are so excited to see the changes we can't stand it!

Yes, Hedo is way better than it was in 2003.

I don't whine to be annoying, so I guess I'll sign off. Ciao!

I remember when people were having a fit they were going to install telephones in the rooms. I also remember when people were having a fit they were going to install TVs in the rooms. We all got over that.

Not long ago, some people were having a fit there was going to be WiFi available........ anywhere and that some people could be on the beach with cell phones or tablets with cameras.

Time passes, things change, some people will lament or oppose changes, but I suspect we'll still find a way to get over it.

Now, for that drone defense system we need....... smile
