For those who may not know, most of the palms that line the sidewalk going towards the hot tub were planted in 1989 as a special way of recognizing longtime guests who had supported Hedo since its opening. Signs were made for those guests and the trees dedicated personally.
Over the many years that followed, other guests were so thanked for their loyalty as well with plantings and signs.
I was fortunate to receive one about 13 years ago.
When I returned last week, I found my sign missing and some other recent guests had affixed their own sign. I noticed this with many other tree's including ones from 1989 where the original signs were covered over or tossed in the brush.
Please respect these areas and those who came before you. There are many places to display your Hedo pride while keeping the long history and meaning behind these trees to those who cherish them with pride.

I should have phrased this "respect" trees rather than "memorial".
Do keep in mind that many of those trees are the final resting place for the remains of those so honored.
Tread lightly, please.

I think maybe it would be a good idea to have a sign / plaque there explaining what is going on, too many of these kids have no idea nor do they care.... I suppose.

There is a small brass plaque but it needs polishing to be read.

I don't see a sign explaining the significance of the trees and signs as helping much. Mainly because I feel that anyone who needs a sign to explain to them why they should not vandalize ANYTHING is too stupid and self-centered to get anything out of reading such a sign.
Respect... too often a word, not often enough a way of behaving.

The resort or local artists don't provide all those signs or dedicate trees to guests. Many people bring their own signs and attach them to the trees.
I believe if you were to ask mgmt how many of those trees are officially designated by mgmt, you'd be surprised by the low number.
Over time many signs age and fall apart. They are wood, after all, in a tropical climate. They won't last forever without maintenance, and I don't believe that Hedo staff does that kind of maintenance.
Leaving ashes on Jamaican land is illegal without a permit, but some guests do it secretly.
Notoriously, human beings do what signs say not to do. Research has showed that, for example, if you put up a "no trespassing" sign that people are more prone to trespass.

We have given up putting a sign by our tree. It was planted by the resort and the resort did provide the first sign. We have replaced the sign twice and had it claimed by others three times. WE know it's our tree and just check to see it's still alive every trip.
