Why wouldn't Hedo management disallow people from reserving floats as they reserve their beach chairs?

In the last few days, there were no floats available because everyone placed them on their chair and placed towels or other stuff on top. I kind of get it that people may want to reserve a chair, but what right do they have to reserve shared floats?

That would be an excellent question to pose to either the Hotel Manager (Donna Grant) or Customer Relations (Lorna Brammer) while you are there!

I don't think the chairs are comfortable without the float or whatever you call it. They should have as many as there are chairs.

When Hedo first acquired the "floats", they were placed on the beach loungers. The chairs at time were more uncomfortable than the ones the have now. People used them for comfort while sitting and for floating if they desired. As they started to disappear and deteriorate, finding one for either use became more challenging.

People have long brought their own inflatable raft or ask to borrow others' rafts...that's been the status quo for as long as I can remember.

I happened to talk with Harry about this just 2 weeks ago. They are 'testing' some new floaties. He said the typical lifespan of the floaties is roughly 3 months or so (his words at the time), because of the use conditions, escaping by floating away, etc. and they have to replace them frequently. I thought the newer model was OK, but not as good as the older model.

Anyway, I agree with Chris..... if you want to be relatively sure you will have a floatie; bring your own and put it in your room at night. I know that sounds like a PITA, but it's better than not being able to find a floatie to use or spending precious time unhappy because the resort doesn't have enough of the chair pads.

The new loungers that were just bought last year for the entire resort are far more comfortable than the old ones. This means that no one should be able to use the excuse of droopy loungers to justify hoarding the floats. The ones that are there should be left on the beach and shared around as people go in the water. But Chris is right... if you want to be sure of getting a float bring your own inflatable. And it isn't necessary to bring it to your room every night if you just mark your name and dates on it. I've always found everyone is pretty good about respecting the private inflatables.

If I bring my own float down with me do I need to bring an inflator with me or can I fill it up at the scuba shed?

The staff at the dive shack will inflate it for you.

The dive hut staff will repair leaks, too.

Thinking about this more, the beach attendants, place the floats in the beach chairs every evening, indicating they belong there. They do not stack them in a separate place, they put them together. To me this gives guests the indication that the float and the chair go together.

On one visit a few years ago, I was ill. Nothing serious, but I felt like a blob. As I was blobbing one afternoon, my entertainment included watching the ripples lapping the beach. After a while the ripples slowly lifted a float that was at the waterline. Before long the float was free of the sand and the ripples carried the it around the point. Then the float was off on an ocean adventure. Had I not been sick, I would have retrieved it before it was too late, but getting up was just too much that day. Point is: I am sure many floats are lost the same way. I think too, I read hear once of people thinking they were souvenirs and stuffing them in their suitcases. I guess that would be another source of shrinkage.

Agree with Max2Deb. I know of guests who've stolen pads. They get my wrath if I find out.

Many guests often leave floats close to the waterline after use. The ocean then redeems them.

The sun and abrasive sand also break them down after time. They probably only have a useful life of about 12 months. Something that should be a part of routine replacement.

I saw dozens of boxed, brand new floats in the receiving area in November.

As a theft deterent, they should probably leave the hotel name off of them. That might help.

What size luggage will hold one of those floats? How low class can one be to go to the trouble of stealing a float? The floats are not exactly cheap.

Nor are they light.

I don't care what anyone says, it's total BS that guests stuff the floats in their luggage and take them home. They can't be folded up to fit in a suitcase -- even the largest suitcase. There is no way you could get one out the front door without security seeing it. And why would you want to, the oversize package costs of taking one of these on an airplane would far outweigh the costs of just buying one back home. It's just plain dumb and wrong for people to say on here that guests take those things home.

I know two guests over the years who have TOLD me they took the floats home.

Seemed amazing to me because of their bulk and heft, besides the theft part of the equation.

Maybe they should give you two "float cards" when you check in. You redeem them for floats with the float master and have to turn the floats in at the end of the day and get your float cards back. If you don't return your float cards when you check out, you get charged for the floats. (he said with tongue in cheek).

Clever remark Janico. I like your sarcasm. I don’t know the answer to your first question about necessary luggage size, T-38 but I share your sentiment. I wanted to cite Ms. Chris as my source, but was not sure and did not want to do the research -- Doug backs it up. You would be surprised what some people would do Tricksy, the moment people aren't watching. [remember some during their first weekend away at college?] Bizarre, I know, and maybe Chris’ source(s) were posturing, but there it is. Careful not to protest too much.

Well, if it Does happen, perhaps someone brought a special case (surfboard or ski) to hide it in? Although that might be a little hard to explain to Customs...

Greg and Kelly, my common sense detected that float. Either my sense of sight or my sense of smell. Sorry! What makes me say such things.

I was going to say not to worry because it was one of the Hedo floats we brought home in our suitcase, but I realized someone that didn't know me would think I was serious.

And I'm hardly ever serious.

To back up Chris, I saw the float, a life ring with logo and an ornate champagne bucket, all happily displayed and bragged about personally.

I was, and am...being serious. I was invited to their home and saw it myself.

It wasn't funny to me then, and it still isn't now.

I have never had any issues with the provided floats except when you can only find 6 on the beach that are not torn up. I admit to using one on my chair as most others do. It is part of the all inclusive experience and I assume that the use of a float all day is part of that experience. I do always bring a blow up float for the ocean, so not to use two floats.

This is one of the problems... people that assume because it is an all-inclusive resort think that they are entitled to as much of anything as they want and to hell with everybody else. It causes a problem with the floats because there aren't 500 of them on the resort. And it causes a problem with the towels when people think that they can hoard 5 or 6 of them while other people might have to do without.
It's also sad the way people waste food and liquor there because its "all included in what they pay for". It's sinful to see the amount of food that gets taken back from dinner tables and how many glasses of booze have one sip taken out of them and then left while another one is gotten.
It's too bad so many of us have this feeling of total entitlement.

Bunz z can use my resort float. I don't use one...and I seldom use a beach towel too...she can have that one too.

Towels are seldom ever a problem any more because the resort has lots of them. Sure there's not a float for everyone, but chairs don't always need a pad. And if you want to borrow a float (Hedo's or someone else's) usually that's no biggie either.

Hedo does have lots of food/drink waste, but that's part of the decadence that Hedo offers. Sinful or sad, it's also convenient (sometimes a drink sucks or you lose it) and a long-time reality of Hedo.

I don't think it's entitlement, but rather how the system of Hedo works (we can be brainless and have so many pleasures met).

The beach chairs do need a mat or float. A towel will only go so far - what with bird poop and sweat, a float is also easier to clean.

If you want to get ticked off about something, how about people who put signs on chairs to reserve them ALL WEEK? Seriously?

Sorry we disagree on the float issue. The resort should supply enough floats for all. Most resorts do and I think Hedo tries. I do use my float most of the day but leave it to get a drink or when I am in the water. If their are a shortage of floats and I see someone looking for one, I have given my float to others to use when I'm not using it. In short I do think a float is included in my all-inclusive stay. If you can't find one you should ask for one.

The key to this issue is: if you want a float ASK a Water Sports dude - I see them bringing out new ones every day if there's a shortage and someone asks. Some weeks are heavy beach weeks and others are heavy pool groups so the floats "float" from the beach to the pool area and back depending on the crowd. Water Sports know where the floats are and are always happy to accommodate. just ask.
