We see this mentioned occasionally. On our previous trips we weren't aware of this but then again every midnight we were otherwise occupied (drinking our midnight nourishment). Is there an actual midnight buffet? 07/29/11 come on mon'!

Yes, there is....sometimes it's left over items from dinner...they always have hamburgers, most of the time french fries, salad, fruit, and dessert.

There is a cook whose only assignment is the midnight buffet.
To add to spidercat's list, sometimes they serve those hotdogs that glow in the dark.
Might be able to get a grilled cheese
There are condiments for the hamburgers and hotdogs (relish, mustard, catchup, lettuce, onions). The main bar is still open when the midnight buffet starts.

There is not a lot of food, but enough to feed those that show up.

Do any of you remember when Negril Beach Village had the sliders at midnight? I really would like to see those return. When away, I would dream of the sliders and the tree frogs.

If I recall, the food is very sub-par, even for Hedo standards. I would love to report otherwise, however, I speak from first-hand experience. It is terrible. The food at the day grills is far superior.

Ginny, you are right, the midnight buffet is not all that, but the burger with fries will do the trick at midnight for me/

Ginny, you are right, the midnight buffet is not all that, but the burger with fries will do the trick at midnight for me/ The burger works for us too, but as Baron suggested in his trip report, ask them to put it on sandwich bread rather than the roll because the burger is too little for that big roll and it ends up being a bread sandwich. I'd starve to death, though, before I would eat one of those red, so called hot dogs floating in the pink water.

Those neon-pink hot dogs are great! But alas, I haven't seen any in several years.

At midnight I like a little dish of the soft ice cream (although it's really not very good compared to stateside soft ice cream).

Two years ago our flight from London was severely delayed and we got to Mobay after eleven in the evening. The Superclubs desk was closing for the night and had to re-open and then find a driver prepared to head out to Negril that late in the evening. We finally arrived around 1am, checked in, dropped our bags in the room and headed to the dining room to get something to eat.
We had been prisoners of Virgin Atlantic for 18 hours, sustained only by in-flight catering (have you noticed that they don’t offer you aircraft food any more it’s now ‘in-flight catering?’ I bet if they fed prisoners in Gitmo on ‘in-flight catering’ Amnesty International would be petitioning the UN within a week; anyway…)
We were hungry but the buffet was being cleared as we arrived. There was not much left but it all looked like it had been pretty good. Seeing the look of haunted desperation in our eyes the wonderful kitchen staff prepared a selection of snacks to keep us going until breakfast.
So if you get to the midnight buffet after it’s closed don’t worry; so long as you look as desperate as me the kitchen staff will take pity on you!

I don't know what is is about Hedo's fries, but they are simply the best!!! It might be that transfats haven't been outlawed in Jamaica. I suspect that the fries are not fried in pure, extra virgin olive oil. I think it's also what I call "The Hot Dog Effect". Ever notice how great hot dogs taste at the ball park or a picnic, so much so that you decide to have them for dinner one night and then ask yourself, "Why are we eating hot dogs for dinner"? Everything tastes better at the pool surrounded by a bunch of great people having fun.

Fries: rumor was that they were fried in lard.
Not true.
Looked at the container for the fries oil and it said vegetable oil.
So it must be the potatoes that come in that frozen package.
But the taste of the fries is not really related exclusively to the midnight buffet.

On our first trip we arrived at hedo about 12am, after having left Reno at 6am. Neither of us had eaten all day, so we were a couple of starving marvins. I don't think it took us more than ten minutes after check-in, to get a drink at the nude pool bar and directions to the midnight buffet. Another 20 minutes, we were back at the nude pool. That night, those greasy hamburgers and fries may have been the best we'd ever eaten. We didn't even bother to wait the suggested 30 minutes before going swimming. Cramps be damned.

The midnight buffet hamburgers taste pretty good, but I wish the cooks would fry up some of that good Hedo bacon to put on them. Nothing like Hedo bacon! If the cooks at H2 made Hedo bacon ice cream, I'd eat it.

We had one trip about 5 years ago where they had a tray of scrambled eggs and a tray of bacon out every night during the midnight buffet. It was brilliant, but short lived. Now they don't even have the scrambled eggs out in the morning anymore (some kind of health issue, I've heard) Anyway, it took me about 12 trips to realize that they always have two pots of different kinds of soup out during midnight buffet as well. If we had discovered that years ago, that would have been a lot less midnight hamburgers for us.

Have you noticed that the midnight soups are always based on what was served earlier that day? If there was bean salad for dinner there would be bean soup later that night, etc.
Waste not want not.

Sounds like good old firehouse "ice box" soup ... whatever was leftover in the fridge went into the soup.

Are those "pink" hot dogs the same as those sold in the states?

I have never seen a hot dog of that color anywhere in the world except at Hedo. The hot dogs themselves are red. The water that they sit in is pink.

Those "extra red" hot dogs may be okay to eat, but we tend to stay away from them. They are just too much of a mystery. Any food with that much dye can't be too healthy. A friend in the meat business once told me that the red dye used in "extra red" hot dogs is the same dye used to dye chew toys red for doggy Christmas gifts. I guess they won't kill you, but... Hey, at least they always look fresh.

again, on a food issue, I will say that I always always enjoy the midnight buffet when I can stay up for it.
The hot dogs are absolutely phenomenal and a staple for some (admittedly not me, im a nathan's man) in New England, and I doubt they are that bad for you, in general, or at least as compared to any other hot dog!
It is fun to socialize, and have a few beers, and eat a burger in the dining room late at night, either mid activity or on the way to bed.
I am always grateful when i get up there and its actually still going on!! Counting down the minutes now, and cant wait for my first midnight burger, or my second (probably both on the same night)!!

This red dog discussion peaked my curiosity. I Googled it and found out that they are made in Maine and just the casing is dyed red. No wonder it is in all the supermarkets in Mass. Now I will have to try one.....in 25 days!!!!!!!!

Ok, but once you see them floating in that pink water, your enthusiasm to try them might not be as great as it is now.

@Ginny, I do not doubt your post but I find it difficult to believe that SC would import these glowing hotdogs from Maine since there are hotdog producers in Jamaica.
Can you share that link your referred to?

In over two decades I never tried one at Hedo and propably never will. I do eat a hot dog occasionally at home ... in the summer.

there were no hot dogs on the midnight buffet this past week (june 15 thru 22). I would have eaten one at least one night if there were but there were not.

Anyone ever read "A Confederacy of Dunces"? It is set in New Orleans, and prominently features the rolling hot dog carts of the French Quarter. I love those carts, and that is one reason I love the glowing red neon Hot Dogs of Hedo.......Jake

I agree with the above post about the midnight buffet being a socail spot. We always end up sitting there talking to friends for a long time. It is more layed back and you can actually talk since the band has already left. It's a nice break while walking from the disco on the way to the hot tub.
