Steve & Sabrina - May, 2010
Desire Resort and Spa – Cancun – May 17 – May
19, 2010
This trip was very unexpected. After getting a gift for a three day all inclusive vacation to a textile resort in Cancun, we added three days to our five day FILP trip in Ft. Lauderdale, and jumped on a JetBlue flight to Cancun. Flight easy, immigrations and customer uneventful. Then, the pain began…
Once we got to the resort we were originally to stay, nothing that we were promised happened. No one knew any answers. We were juggled from person to person. So, we used their phone and called Desire’s. They had availability nights of May 17 – May 18 so we took it and were put on a waiting list for May 19th. A $35.00 cab ride later, we were at Desire.
Check in staff great. Champagne and cool cloth at check in which was quick. They could see we were stressed from wasting day arguing at other resort and in cabs, so they delivered our room key quickly and led us to our room. Oops, they were still cleaning room. But bags were deposited and we were taken down to the pool area and given a beach bed to relax on for the remainder of the day. This is a very nice way to spend time on the beach. Comfy mattresses and gentle breeze blowing.
After having a drink and relaxing for a while, went to room. Room was very nice – much nicer than Hedo II or Hedo III. Very clean, with a balcony and nice bathroom. We did not really have a view (faced a fountain and the entrance to resort) but beggars can’t be choosers. We decided to go back out to the pool but saw stairs to hot tub and decided to check it out. The hot tub is on the roof of a building. It is good sized, water very warm. Overlooked beach area, had bar access from hot tub as well as a sit down bar outside the tub. Towels readily available and they have cubbies that you can put your things which was just thoughtful. We sat down at bar and ordered a drink. Pretty soon, bar was full, we met a ton of new people who shared their tequila with us (which they purchased by the bottle – don’t remember the name of it but very good). Hot tub filled up like at Hedo around 5 pm. Steve and I were talking about a couple we met many years ago at Hedo II who we always seem to run into. Last time we saw them was during Fantasea Fest Cruise. Well, not ½ hour later, Steve looks in hot tub and who do we see? That couple we were talking about, Gene and Rita who were celebrating their anniversary! Sat in tub and talked to them for a while. We decided to go to dinner and left to get ready.
We went to Suki Unique for dinner. Food was good. We also ordered a bottle of champagne which was also good. But alas champagne and tequila (as well as stressful day) caught up with us, so we went to bed. It RAINED all night long. Some rooms and restaurants had a bit of water in them and resort put towels down on some of the stairs because tile is very slippery when wet.
Next morning, I was up early (as usual) and went to pool area. This is a really cool feature at Desires. You can book a lounge chair by the pool. Sign up in the morning and begin using within 2 hours. No more than 2 hours vacancy during day or chair is reassigned. Got two lounges with an umbrella and table, cool towels that have corners sewn in so you towel does not blow away and a pillow. I put my things down and went to lobby bar to get a cup of coffee for us. Coffee great there! Spent the day relaxing at the pool and made dinner plans with Gene and Rita for that night. Went to hot tub for a while then went to get ready for dinner. It was raining again so we took the umbrella (in room at Desire – another thoughtful touch) and met at Il Piacere. Food and company was fabulous! We then went to disco (which is very nice) where we got the main bed in front of the dance floor. Watched dance kids who were brought in for entertainment. After a while in disco, we left for the hot tub and stayed in hot tub until closing time at 3:00 am.
Wednesday came and no rooms were available so we had to leave Desire and go back to other resort for one night. It rained all day so did not do much of anything. After one night in the “other” textile resort (filled with honeymooners and people using walkers), terrible food and “entertainment” that included a ping pong tournament or a movie or guest American Idol, the entertainment thankfully ended at 11:00 pm. After that night, we were so glad that we got to stay at Desire for two days!
Notes:
· Comparing to Hedo, only thing I did not like was the dress codes. It was too much to keep up with casual, casual elegance, etc. Not so much issue for women more for men.
· Desire staff bent over backward to make sure you were happy and had everything you needed.
· Appreciated little touches like umbrella, robes in room, little mini bar with water, coke, diet coke and corona, cubbies at hot tub for your things, ability to sign up for pool chair
· Very clean
· It rained every day. Tiles are very slippery so be very careful. Heard a guest on Wednesday at check in who slipped and fell and broke her toe.
· All inclusive is kind of interesting here. It can be all inclusive but if you want a beach bed or a good wine or champagne, it is extra. Some liquors are extra too.
· Desire staff is not “in your face” screaming for guests to join in activities like at Hedo which is nice.
This is a great resort and we will be back!
