Jim and Kelli Desire July 6-13, 2006
Get yourself a 43 and club soda, we’re gonna be here a while.
After eight days of pure magic it was something that I had to write about.
Do I start at the beginning or jump right in at the lobby? Ok, the beginning
it is. It all started two years ago when we met this couple at H3, then we
carried it over to last summer with the same couple but add two more
(couples that is). We all agreed to meet up again at Desire.
As time wound down (the little ticker on your desktop, don‘t lie, you have
one too), we began to realize our flights were scheduled all within 20
minutes of each other. I reserved Cancun Shuttle and they waited for us and
toted the 8 to Desire for 70usd total. What a deal! Super nice company, new
vehicles, best prices, and they take Paypal! Hint, book it a week or so
before your trip because they will send you a welcome/confirmation letter
with a 10% off coupon for excursions of which all are 100% refundable.
20 minutes later, we arrive at Paradise. Let the fun begin. We are
immediately cooled with wonderfully frozen towels, chilled with champagne,
and tagged like the guilty (with pleasure) prisoners of Desire we will soon
become. We asked for rooms near each other…..LOL. At least we were in the
same resort. No problem, everyone had a different room, different building,
all was good because we got to explore each other’s shower stall. We started
out in 2313, upstairs near the tennis courts, but sometime on day two we
were upgraded to 2504 oceanfront ground floor because of “power problems”.
Again, no problem, they asked us to pack and ring them. They would come and
get our bags. We rang them and within 2 minutes I swear a man was waiting to
take our bags! We walked down the stairs and to the new room and that man
must know of some elevator because he had all of our bags at our new house
within another 2 minutes of our arrival. I would have still been lugging the
shoe bag down the steps! We all kept referring to our rooms as “your house,
my house” etc. I felt at home, only better. No kids, no cooking, no laundry.
Room was nice (first one was too), had queen bed, bathroom, shower that we
figured how not to splash water, chaise, mosaic mirrored wall, ample
closet/drawer space, vanity, tv (which I could have cared less for) and two
doors with two options for privacy. One was standard hotel light blockers
and the other was a white sheer which we used so the daylight would waken us
at 6:30 ish.
The grounds were beautiful! What a tremendous job the keepers have done
since Wilma. I know all too well what hurricanes can do to your landscaping
and aside from a few sod mismatches and missing trees, you would think
Desire had a plastic protective bubble around it during the storm. Every
morning someone raked the beach of the tides deposit. Also, Victor the Beach
Concierge was a total sweetheart. I fell asleep a couple of times on a
palapa and when I awoke there was a flower next to me. I thanked him and he
said that he saw me with it in my hair the day before and wanted to bring
more. You bet I wore a flower every day he brought one, even putting one in
my Canada’s hair. Zazil, what a sweetheart! She remembers your drink and
everyone else’s and carries them all at the same time! She is a wonder
woman! They even brought cold towels to us on the palapa! There was never a
problem getting a bed, even the days when we *gasp* left the resort!
The pool was beautiful, although I must admit we spent most of our time on
the beach. OK, I lie, I had to do math homework too, but it never lasted
long. Thankfully Punch Buggy was a math major, you learn so much about your
friends at Desire you never knew!
Breakfast ~ great, super, you should try all of the Spanish breakfast
foods, they were so good. Then get yourself some pancakes, eggs, French
toast, waffles, omelets, cereal, yogurt, fresh fruit, oh boy! And if you are
lucky a certain man with teach you true Mayan…. The dirty kind! Breakfast
was always wonderful!
Lunch ~ served daily poolside. A slight variety every day, always to
include grouper, hamburgers, grilled chicken breast, NACHOS with GUACAMOLE
and QUESO (yes that’s a staple). Also I enjoyed the fresh soup, always
different every day. Hot soup in hot weather you ask? Yes, let it cool while
you eat your lunch and then it’s perfect! They had jalapeno poppers, pizza,
meat-on-a-stick (was good), French fries, chilli, steamed veggies, salad
bar, etc. There was more but I always ate grouper and soup and pizza and
didn’t watch everything my friends ate.
Dinner ~ First night we at the buffet, grilled lobster OMG so good!
We ate Suki at the long table another night, was good again. Third night we
ate International, hands down the BEST! There were four of us and Angel
(sweet sweet man) suggested we each get a different main course and slide
our plates around as to sample everything. Lamb rack, Petit Chateaubriand
(beef fillet medallions), grilled salmon, grilled grouper. They were all
SUPER with gorgeous presentation. Other items they had was Coquille St.
Jacques, Queso Brie, A grapefruit tower (can’t remember the name), Caesar
salad, some salad with pear, lobster bisque, and of course the desserts! My
favorite was the mango with fresh cream sauce. MMMM! Ok 4th night
we at Suki at the back table, with the grill. That was a real treat, the
chef (his name escapes me) was funny and entertaining. There was a problem
with the a/c that night but the staff kept us cool with more drinks and
fanning us with trays. Worked great! Every night after that, we ate at the
International. For my big birthday, (I turned 30 but don’t tell anyone), the
chef made me a cake that said “Happy Birthday Princessa”. They made a rose
out of foil and lit in for my candle! Angel even made paper roses for the
girls (which I still have). Turning 30 was great!
Maid service (Nancy) was super, our room always smelled delicious
when we walked in. Whatever she cleaned with, I need some. We had towels of
bunnies, elephants, swans, etc just like Disney (only way better).
Off-site ~ Tulum, get a group and go by taxi. Going on the bus
was horrible; you had to pick up people with… KIDS! Too long of a trip and
we were done after an hour. Site was beautiful, beach was really beautiful,
and shopping was ok. Playa del Carmen, shopping was typical touristy
thing. Took a taxi and he waited for us and wouldn’t take payment until we
got back home. Bargain with the shopkeepers. It’s easier than you think.
Remember to bring lots of small change, 1’s, 5’s, and 10’s. You don’t want
pesos unless you plan on doing more shopping where you can spend it.
Cancun, at night was like any nightlife anywhere else in the world. I
would skip it, bunch of teenage kids running around drink, lol. We did find
a strip club called The One, but I will keep this g-rated.
Misc. ~ Disco was ok, they played Rick Astley and I about fell down
laughing, not because I was drunk either. The music might get better later
on but you would have to suffer through Cyndi Lauper first. I took a pole
dance lesson and realize I was a stripper in another life. Mia says “You
should never show the man your papaya”. That’s now what I say when I “have a
headache”. Hot tub always nice, beds up there nice too. Lobby bar, morning
tender was so great. I left my sunglasses before heading to Tulum and he put
them behind the bar until we walked by later and he gave them to me. Late
night pizza was yummy.
Final words. If you want to rekindle that flame, head to Desire. We will
return at the very latest next July, but are trying to find someone to keep
the kids before then… any takers? We are still relaxed and glassy eyed from
our trip. Words can’t explain the pure passion and provocative bliss that
Desire can give. After almost 12 years of marriage, our love is richer,
sexier, and most definitely erotic (oh wait, that’s something else).
