Desire Resort Trip Report
We went to Desire Resort, Cancun, June 11-16. We flew
non stop from Midway, Chicago, for a 3 hour & 20 min.
trip. The taxi from the airport to the resort cost
$40, which I thought was excessive. Later, when we
returned to the airport, the cost was $30. Still too
much, I thought.
The resort is located south of Cancun about 8 or 10
miles down the coast. It is not far from the Carribean
Reef Resort.
Desire Resort is located in a very remote area with
only one other resort nearby. The buildings are all
relatively new. Some of them are 6 years old, but
others are much newer. There are about 110 rooms in
several catagories, ocean view, garden view, jacuzzi
rooms, and passion suites. We had a tour of all the
different types of rooms and found the jacuzzi rooms
and passion suites to be really beautiful.
When you arrive at the resort, they greet you with a
glass of cold champagne, get you registered right away
and get you to your room. We stayed in a garden view
room, queen size bed. Almost everything in the room is
made of cement. Even the shelf under the mirror and
the platform for the bed. There is no dresser in any
of the rooms and they could use more shelves in the
closet to put some of your clothing on. There's a
little refridgerator in the closet in the room and
they give you bottled water every day. All of the
buildings are very beautiful and well kept. The beach
is gorgeous with white sand.
There are two dining rooms with separate menus, one of
them more formal and has more upscale food for dinner.
That room was beautiful, all white with soft white
curtains hanging from the ceiling. We ate there 2 or 3
times. Only 2 of the meals were buffets, all the rest
were sit down and order from the menu type meals.
There is also a snack/grill next to the pool with good glacamole and cheese nachos.
You can have anything you want to drink with your
meals. We had cold white wine with most of our
dinners.
The food was very well prepared and was presented in a
very fine way.
There were some organized activities throughout the
day. Kay liked water aerobics, spanish class, and some
of the pool games. Also, they had stretching
exercises, beach and water volleyball, horseshoes,
boci ball, a style show, a body painting contest, etc.
Various kinds of massages may be purchased and Kay
enjoyed her massage very much.
There are 2 swimming pools, plenty large enough for
the size of the resort. There are plenty of very large
thick towels everywhere, stacked by the pool, stacked
in the play areas, and on lounge chairs and by the hot
tub.
The hot tub is located on top of one of the new
buildings. It's a favorite gathering place. There are
7 full sized beds in the area next to the hot tubs.
These beds had a lot of use. The bar next to the hot
tub (swim-up) served some of the best drinks at the
resort. The old bartender there makes good pina
colatas. There are 2 other bars, the main one near the
lobby and one near the large swimming pool and beach.
The hot tub bar closes at about 6:30 at night,
however, all the liquour with mixers are put out for a self-serve bar. I have never seen anything like this done before at a resort. All the booze are excellent brands, Beef-eater gin, Smirnoff's, Jim Beam, Canadian Mist, etc.
Another favorite place to go at night, after the
entertainment around the pool, is the disco. We went
there and danced every night at least for a while.
There's a playroom behind the bar at the disco, a
beautiful room upholstered, with lots of pillows and
towels.
On our last night there, we went to the playroom and
there was plenty of action. Most of the people were
playing with their own mates with only a few
exceptions.
We met a lot of very nice people on this trip. We had
dinner with a different couple almost every night. The
people were very friendly, good conversationalists,
and fun to visit with.
This resort just opened under its new management in
April and most weeks they've had only 10 to 20 couples
there most of the time. We like to have more people
around than that, but we are sure that the number of
guests will be increasing at this resort.
We have been to Hedo II in Jamaica about 5 different
times and we will run down some of the features of
this resort and tell how they compare to Hedo.
Location: Not as easy to get to town for shopping or
for any other reason as it is at Hedo.
Buildings & pools: Better than Hedo.
Beach: Much better than Hedo.
Hot tub: Not as large as Hedo's, but very nice and
under the stars.
Nudity: Allowed almost anywhere at Desire. The
exceptions being the dining rooms and the lobby. Hedo
has a nude side and clothing optional side.
Food: Better than Hedo.
Wait staff & entertainment coordinators: About equal
with Hedo.
Entertainment: Not as good as Hedo, but we expect that
it will improve as they get more guests.
Price: Better than Hedo.
Our recommendation: Try the Desire Resort.
Desire is owned by the same company now that owns Blue
Bay Get-Away. Every day we met some people who came
over to our resort from the Blue Bay Get-Away and they
were very nice people. They liked the atmosphere at
Desire better. The crowd was a little older and not as
rowdy. Most people at Desire that week were in their
40's or 50's.
