Bob & Jean - November, 2006

General observations: loved it would go back anytime.

Beach: we have been to both Hedo's and desire Cancun and this place is as good on almost all counts and better on the rest.  The beach itself is the physically the best beach.  It is under utilized (not-at-all) by the resort.  I'm not sure where the "not allowed" talk comes from but there were people in the surf all up and down the beach.  It has some of the best breaks for a resort area (surfing-wise), and after a while it might be cool if the resort got some soft-top long boards for messing around.  Perhaps some oceanographer can enlighten me, but growing up in the surf and swimming/paddling since I could walk, I have never been on a beach, especially with the tide line drop off at Cabo, that doesn't have an undertow.  Riptides are an entirely different experience, and not one the average swimmer or non-ocean swimmer could negotiate.  I could not find a rip within ten minutes walking distance in either direction of the hotel.  There were no sand bars or channels.  We were thinking maybe it was being discouraged because of the political nudity problem locally.  You know as well as I do that if a lot of hedo2 ex-pats did a take over they would try to make the beach nude(not that there is anything wrong with the theory, just the practice).  I hear they are planning a shower to rinse the sand when you come up from the beach.  A hose would do fine for now.

Chairs: available for your frustration is the ever present chair reserving that goes on everywhere, not just at these types of resorts.  I've never been on a cruise (kill me if I ever speak the thought aloud), but I hear it goes on there with the civilized people as well.  This problem is exacerbated by the obvious shortage of standard loungers.  Seemed like plenty of beds on the cement and sand.  Maybe twelve loungers for however-many rooms (130-150?).  An equal number of love seat type loungers where you can sit up but can't lay down (might have been the answer to some lost days at Hedo for yours truly).

"ON MY SOAPBOX" the fault lies not with our chairs, dear Brutus, but with ourselves. The folks at Atlantic shores in Key West had the best system for chairs.  When you got there, they put another one out.  When you left, they picked it up.  Plenty of room if you wanted to be near friends they put you near within reason.  If your arrival times were far apart and you were really friends, you shared.  Shame on you who reserve a chair with the full knowledge that you are blocking it for selfish reasons.  You don’t deserve it more than anyone else.  You’re not more deserving because you think you're whatever; older, prettier, richer, nicer, more repeater, faster, smarter or anything else.  You are more rude and selfish and inconsiderate.  believe it or not, if you are going to get up for a while and took you stuff and put it all in a bag alongside the chair and someone else could use it for a while they would cheerfully offer it back to you on you're return if you let them.  whatever kill or be killed mentality that drove all the guests of Hedo and Desire to be masters of the corporate world and made them the captains of industry and world leaders surprisingly seems incongruous with respect ,free love, tolerance and good times and merriment with which they comport themselves in all other ways .  I realized after re-reading this part that my frustration is cumulative from other resorts, and in no way is directed at the few people who were at Cabo for our trip

Travel: a little long from the east coast versus Jamaica or Cancun, about 3 hours each vs.6 hours Cabo which means a full day travel coming back with the time change as opposed to leaving at dinner time so you have to factor one day of available time east coast.  Probably what west coast travelers deal with going to Jamaica or Cancun?  The airport experience was like a day at the beach compared to the hell on earth that is Sangster international (it's my report I can say what I want).  Nice enough ride to the resort, about twenty minutes through a standard     peripheral airport industrial support zone, not much scenery.  Easy hook up with the ground transport who were very helpful and polite.  No desperate feeling of Cancun to try to get away from the barkers.  Apologies to all hard working Jamaicans and a shame on you to the corporate or government people responsible for MBJ, Los Cabos is a truly clean professional resort airport.  15-20 years ago this was a block building with a hole in the wall and two folding tables for baggage claim.  Look to the south of the terminal, that outbuilding that looks like a garage is the whole old airport.   Today they have a bustling little beachside international travel center.

Rooms: beds and bedding, couch, tables, safe, closets, dressing mirrors, sink and dressing area, rain type shower head, shower door, shower mat for floor,  reasonable light switch placement, hot water, fridge(with refreshments), balcony with inexpensive resin furniture, air conditioner with thermostat, TV, CD radio, ironing board, hair dryer, soaps and lotions, coffee maker, room service menu, extra blanket, ice bucket, blackout drapes, telephone, only complaint not enough wattage for dressing in the main bedroom area.

Language: all the staff tries to speak English or speaks it very well.  They all seem to appreciate it when you try to show courtesy with phrases in Spanish, and will help you when you mess up.

People: friendly, smiling, sleeping, dancing, intelligent, exotic, asian-european-american-australian-african-antarctic mix, and a couple from New Jersey.

Food: the specialty and main restaurants were excellent as far as food quality and variety, its not as regimented as Cancun (no reservations needed or restricted) or limited as either Hedo (I have had some really not awful meals in the specialty restaurants).  You may have found fault if you are a New York Times food critic. The servers need a little polish, but the handsome gentleman who requires a smile before seating is a great talent.  I’m sorry I didn’t take more time to learn his name, but he is very charismatic person who is a great value to the resort.  I’ll do some research and write a complimentary note to the resort soon.  If anybody can help with his name, let me know.

Entertainment crew:  just right for me, a little volleyball and some dancing at night.  No screaming or interruptions.  No transvestites, not that I have a problem with guys who are into it, I just don’t find it particularly entertaining as a theme.  The resort in general could do something to expand the choices.  They had a live band that was great one night by the bar, but they were too loud to allow even basic conversation.  We met people that night who reintroduced themselves the following day because they couldn’t remember what was said or heard the night before.  If they set the band up by the pool, we could have heard each other by the bar and walked a short distance to dance by the pool.  (Do I sound like I’m in my 70’s?)

Theme nights: mostly ignored or misunderstood.  Nobody complained, but those people who did the Adam and Eve especially with the body paint were great!  I liked that there were no “groups”, just one big one.

We just booked our trip to Hedo3 for spring, but we’ll be back for November next year.  To those who were there, we had the best time.  Thank you and see you next year.  If you have any questions, contact us directly bobjeannj@comcast.net
