As a Type 2 diabetic for over 20 years, I've always kept my medicine in my carry-on, never in my luggage. I'm now considering going lock-free for my check-in bag, but it's against my nature -- I'm so territorial that if I so much as found a travel size toothpaste tube missing I'd have a meltdown.

We've never used luggage locks and had only one problem over the years. In January 2016 someone went through my shaving kit and took a $50 bottle of cologne. I was aggravated at first, but considering everything else in the bag guess we were lucky.

It sounds like there are a number of folks here that don't bother using luggage locks because it only gives a false sense of security. I suppose breaking into your luggage and possibly stealing something is somewhat like breaking into your car and stealing it: if somebody's really determined to do it, then they will.

I've never used the locks because I suspect everyone behind the scenes who would want to steal something has a key. I never felt it was much of a deterrent. I have found notes that the bag was inspected, but never found anything missing, just the stuff all jumbled up.

davew - I have only found a note that the bag was inspected one time out of the many trips I've made over the years. Having said that, it appears that you and a number of others are of a like mind -- that the locks are not much of a deterrent. Despite my misgivings/insecurities, I'm giving serious consideration to doing away with them altogether in the future.

I've heard the speculation many times that the locks were removed by baggage handlers trying to steal stuff. Could be true, but my thought is it's more likely that the lock snagged on something along the handling process and got knocked off the bag.

I personally use zip ties to secure any checked bag. If TSA or Customs wants to inspect it, they just cut them off and replace them when they're done. I've only had a bag opened a couple of times for inspection and they always left a note. Thus far, I haven't had a problem with any sort of theft from checked baggage.

So, the recommendation is not to use locks but instead, cheaper re-usable plastic cable ties like this?

So when you arrive how do you get those ties off. Scissors, knife, none of which you can carry on the plane.

@Chris&Suzanne - I originally had the same question, but upon researching and discovering that there were actually reusable ties, it seems these can easily be opened/closed by hand. As per the product description for the item on Amazon to which I linked earlier:

A ribbed inside surface makes them self-locking and secure; and just a quick pinch of the fingers releases the tie.
