Jim & Charles - May, 2007

Having returned from another week in paradise, the week at Hidden Beach could not have been more perfect if every minute had been scripted out.

From the moment of our arrival, we felt like we were welcomed home.

Everyone from the waiters to management made us feel secure and comfortable.  We had one of these marvelous swim up suites….nothing like getting up in the morning and while the coffee is brewing, take a short dip in the pool.   And, to our surprise, the towel art blew us away.  When we could come back after breakfast, there was a sample.  At night after the beds were turned down, another piece of towel art.  We called them “our kids” and had each displayed around the suite during the week.

Oh, by the way, the restaurant coffee relaxes you as you sip a mimosa on the side followed by a delicious buffet breakfast.  It was always fun to check out the morning buffet as the presentations changed each morning.

This time of year is the slower period for the resort, people wise, and that is just fine with us as we prefer not being around or in large groups.  The purpose is to come for relaxation and not be involved with 24-hour chatter.

We were glad to see that the railings have been restored at the hot tub.  Also, we are very happy that plastic stemware has returned.  The idea of having glass around a pool like it was this past December is a law suite waiting to happen.  We are still quite concerned that the railings have not been put back in place at the end of the pool, left side, facing the beach.  This is a slick area and one that needs to be dealt with in short order.

Not to be ignored are broken tiles in the pool.  Several individuals had cuts on their feet and the incidents were reported and taken care of in a relatively short amount of time.  It would not be cost effective and would be horror to the guests if the pool was drained each time instead of using a suited repairperson.

The food was quite a surprise as we noticed quite an improvement…seems like every visit since that awful hurricane has shown overall improvement.  Nothing like having three menus to chose from at mealtime.  If one is into drinks made with tonic water, there has been a major improvement in the brand and ingredients…the tonic water has a very pleasant taste, much improved since previous visits.

One of the highlights of our May visit was a trip to Xcaret, which is an eco-environmental theme park.  We loved the trip down this underground river with life jackets so we could float and take as long as we wanted in admiring the fossil areas through the cave.  Just as wonderful was  the Mayan Cemetery setup and the evening spectacular, which highlighted various aspects of Mexico from the beginning to the present day.

I can honestly say that leaving Mexico was the hardest for me out of any of the six trips we have made to that country.

Over all Hidden Beach has earned a nearly perfect 5 star rating and we will return next May once again.
