Pete & Karol - October, 2007

Desire Los Cabos — Oct 13 – 20 2007

For the record: We traveled to Los Cabos on a Westjet/Sunquest charter flight, out of Toronto. Five hours direct there, 4:17 back. Ontario visitors have an option other than via the USA. We used our RCI timeshare for this vacation.

Note: there is absolutely no timeshare marketing at this resort — good news for everyone!

We arrived mid-afternoon, after a very efficient airport pick-up (an RCI extra). We were offered a cool glass of good ‘champagne’ even before we entered the air-conditioned lobby. Registration was swift and efficient, then off to our room.

The room was a fairly standard hotel size, with an enormous, very comfortable bed. We had sufficient closet and drawer space for our ‘stuff’. All the fixtures, fittings and plumbing were new and of good quality. The mini-fridge was stocked. The digital safe worked easily. The balcony view over the garden was lovely.

A few minutes to unpack and undress and we were off to the pool. The property is typical of those found in Spain. Built as a long ‘U’ with the two arms opening out to the beach, and the base of the U holding the lobby, restaurants, and disco. The garden enclosed by the building uses a desert motif with cactus and other dry land plants. It was immaculately groomed. Close to the ocean and beach lie the large pool, along with a semi outdoors restaurant and bar, and another building with a spa and hot tub above.

A reed fence marks the end of the property and the beginning of the ‘clothing required’ beach. Don’t plan on using the ocean. Long, low waves flow out of an apparently flat ocean and crash on the steeply sloped shore, resulting in hazardous conditions. The BLACK flag was up all the time. We walked the beach but it was a tough slog in coarse sand. But worth the effort and good exercise.

Round the pool area are numerous double-bedded shelters, lounger seats, and chairs. We always found a good place to sit or lie, with sufficient shade to not burn. Everything happens around the pool, during the day.

By late afternoon people drifted up to the large hot tub and bar. Here, too, there were beds, seats and cover. The bar lent a very friendly atmosphere, both during the afternoon and later.

Meals: We ate well, with generally good service (there were a couple of flubs, usually caused by staff inexperience). We did not try the 24 hour room service. Others reported it to be good and prompt.

Drinks: We got everything we ordered, from tea & coffee, to bar service, with no delay. Good service was the norm, and always with a smile, usually with a chat. We used only the bottled water in our room for cleaning our teeth. Water was never a problem.

Pool water: A couple of threads I read on various sites questioned the cleanliness of the pools. I took along a pool test kit. My test results could not be improved upon! I saw the pool boy’s test kit in operation, and I saw maintenance on the hot tub. I also observed very frequent mopping and cleaning. The pool waters were spot on. Period.

Supervision: There were some new staff members. They were generally well trained. Supervision was friendly, encouraging, and discrete. I saw staff being checked, congratulated, and shown a better way to work. All the staff, from the gardeners to the senior managers, were friendly, efficient, and bent on supplying a first-class service. Most were either fluent, or competent in English. A few were competent in other languages (other than Spanish).

Activities: There was a list of daily activities. Most happened somewhere near the appointed time. A few failed due to lack of guest participation. But the staff tried hard.

Guests: This is a new resort. Most guests were on their first visit. In fact, this was the first time many had been to a clothing optional, adult, sensuous resort. Most had never been to an adult resort. In consequence, the resort has yet to evolve its own traditions. There were few ‘old hands’ to show the way. So many new guests were tentative as to what they could do and what was expected of them. Some, I believe, had preconceived fantasies. Reality was, perhaps, more down to earth. Couples soon concentrated on themselves. Some never made it to the late evening disco. There was less mixing and mingling than found at more ‘mature’ resorts. We had a good mix of ages from about 30 to mid sixties. Guests were generally from the Western States and Canada, with a few from Europe and Mexico. A very nice mix.

We took a U$50 off-campus ‘City Tour’ to Cabo St. Lucas. It included a boat tour, shopping, and an excellent Mexican lunch in St. Jose. Since a taxi trip into town was U$35, the value of the seven-hour trip could not be beat. And we got loads of photos we can show the family! Nobody uses their camera around the resort when others are around.

The week went rapidly. We had an excellent time. While Desire Maya is closer to us, depending on airfares etc, we’ll return. I’m expecting the resort to be much fuller next time, particularly if the management rethinks its marketing and pricing. The place will zing if the right groups catch on to it.
